Woking 1 Chelsea Reserves 0

Recommended Posts

A young Chelsea reserve side went down 1-0 at Woking on Wednesday night, in their third pre-season friendly. The only goal came just before half-time from a header at a corner, against a side depleted by injury and unavailability.

The Blues started well when captain Jack Cork found the target, but former Chelsea goalkeeper Lenny Pidgeley was equal to the England Under 21 man's attempt, as he was to Conor Clifford's lengthy free-kick shortly afterwards.

At the other end Craig Falconbridge had a goal chalked off for offside, and then first year scholar Jamal Blackman had to tip a Mark Ricketts volley over the bar.

Gokhan Tore and Milan Lalkovic worked Pidgeley in quick succession before Joe McNerney headed Woking into the lead.

At half-time, Steve Holland opted for a reshuffle, with Cork moving to centre-back, Aziz Deen-Conteh shifting to left-back and Kaby moving into central midfield. On the hour Ben Sampayo replaced Tore, with Billy Clifford moving forward from right-back and beginning to threaten from his midfield role, forcing Pidgeley into a near-post stop, and then Franco Di Santo nodded a corner the wrong side of the post.

Blackman made further stops as the game went from end to end, but there would be no Chelsea breakthrough.

The second string are next in action on Sunday, when a Manchester United XI vists Cobham for a behind-closed-doors friendly.
