Why do we continue to fail in these penalty shoot outs?

We won our first one in a very long time in the community shield at the start of this season.

  • Oct 2005
Carling Cup, third-round: Chelsea 1 Charlton 1 (lost 5-4 on pens)
  • May 2007
Champions Legue, semi-final: Liverpool 1 Chelsea 0 (1-1 agg, lost 4-1 on pens)
  • Aug 2007
Community Shield: Chelsea 1 Man Utd 1 (lost 3-0 on pens)
  • May 2008
Champions League final: Man Utd 1 Chelsea 1 (lost 6-5 on pens)
  • Nov 2008
Carling Cup, fourth round: Chelsea 1 Burnley 1 (lost 5-4 on pens)
  • Aug 2009
Community Shield: Chelsea 2 Man Utd 2 (WON 4-1 on pens)
  • Dec 2009
Carling Cup, quarter-final: Blackburn 3 Chelsea 3 (lost 4-3 on pens)

What do we do wrong? Discuss?

By that statistic we have four more penalties to lose before we win another. Hopefully that win will fall at a special moment in the Champions League. What a shame. We have Ballack, Drogba, Lampard... do either of these guys ever miss? Although Ballack missed yesterday. It's just our lot in life!

Although penalty taking is a skill, there's a fair bit of luck involved too.

I'm not that fussed on how many we've lost in the past, the most important thing is the next one. How many of you thought Ballack would miss his penalty ?

Its just one of those things. If its not right in the corner the keeper always has a chance of saving it.

Does anyone think cech can be at fault sometimes aswell?

Before our last few penalty shoot outs he hardly ever saved a penalty, maybe he has been working on reading the player.

I'm sure I read somewhere I think it was in one of the matchday programmes an interview with Cech and it said something about him reading players and in general how he mentally prepares for a game. I certainly can't fault him at all, from what i've seen so far this season.
