"So, am I to be penalized because both my husband and I are employed andour employers provide decent health care because someone who isunemployed can have health care or some company choose not to providefor their employees?"

Yes because thats what decent and civilised societies do - look after their own who can't look after themselves. Is it their fault they are unemployed? Does their cancer go untreated because they cant find a job or work for an employer that doesn't look after them?

And for the Brits who complain about waiting for essentially free specialist services? Get a taxi to a private hospital and leave the NHS for us who are grateful for it and its staff

I let this drop last november because honestly, I was tired of being raked over the coals. I wasn't bashing your NHS, I was bashing the American version of it... what they have planned isn't good and they have so many other little bills tucked inside of it to pay for it (like tying student loans to national health care... not sure how that goes together!) that I think they needed to fix things before they enacted it. Honestly, I am worried that I will lose my private insurance and that is all. I am not complaining about my tax money going for national health care for those that can't afford it... that I know needs to happen and I am all for that. I just think we need to reign in insurance and pharmaceutical companies along with it. If they weren't so out of control then maybe our health care systems wouldn't be so out of whack...

Just wanted to let you know I'm not really that self-centered and I do care about my fellow citizens, I just think my government is not the best at taking care of them!!

Senseless violence, my department head's cousin was killed in a parking lot because he got angry over someone being parked to close to his vehicle and the other guy had a gun! The shooting happened in front of his 3 children!! Those poor kids!! The trial is happening right now and they convicted the guy who shot him but it's still so senseless.

totally agreed and we have to many in Congress to get that corrected. Here it's legal to carry concealed weapons as long as you have a permit. It is also legal to shoot someone on your property and ask questions second! blink.gif I have my permit but never filed it or bought a gun. the only reason I have it is that I was interviewing with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation for their ballistics and firearms identifications position and thought I should at least have fired a weapon!! I turned down the job because it required 2 years in a city 3 hours from where we live and we couldn't pick up and move (my husband's job is much better than mine and we had 2 small children at the time).

Wise decision

Heres another thing i hate in public

mummys with prams

Ive walked around town centres with these selifish bastards

they dont use these prams as a easier way to get their bambinos around NO they use them as one thing BATTERING RAMS so that they can get ahead in lines etc

Also the ones that have 3-5 abreast buggies knowing that its a busy area dont they realise its dangerous for the public and the infants and it also takes up a load of room

Shooting someone on your property and being able to carry a gun are 2 of the most stupid laws in US. They should change it because too many people die everyday. People feel too confident and they overreact too often.

Well, they are laws in Tennessee and some of the other southern states, but aren't "US" National laws. In the US each state determines certain laws themselves, concealed weapons and the one about shooting someone on your property are two examples. States rights are one of the quirkier things in the US government/law and a contentious one! Like driver's licenses which are state issued instead of being issued by the US Government. There are different regulations for it in each state and some states had to really tighten up their policies after 9/11. There are other odd ones called blue laws that forbid the sale of alcoholic beverages on Sunday (varies state to state) and each state has their own liquor board that determines where beer, wine and "spirits" can be sold (some states you can buy all 3 in a grocery store and in others you have to go to a beer store for beer, a wine store for wine, and a liquor store for the rest! LOL) Oh and wearing helmets when on a motorcycle or scooter, some states don't require it at all, one state just says you have to have something on your head, and others require helmets at all times.

So, it is not enough to know US laws, you have to know the laws for the state you live in!! I've lived in 10 of the 50 states and every move there is always a quirky law or just plain stupid one.

okay, I have a new one... people that make judgements on places they've never been or lived based only on what they hear in the media

I have been to America before, so i hope that's not directed at me !. America is fantastic economically, but many American's have a very low regard for human life, not surprising really when you think about it america was found on crime. The mass murder of the indian's was one of the worst crimes in human history.

I think you should study a little more American history and political science before you go swiping the whole country with such large brush strokes. The entire country was not founded as penal colonies.... Nor does the whole entire nation have a low regard for human life... I personal think you owe me an apology for that one.

Yes the mass murder of the Native Americans (which we prefer to be called by the way! Yes, I am part Native American, my great grandmother was Chippewa) was horrible and yes, I do know that, but it is not the only atrocity in this world and the Americans are not the only ones to commit them!

never said it was directed at anyone! I am however very tired of defending the US and Americans while it gets bashed all of the time. Perhaps I should just give up my membership!

I'm from Poland and every time I go abroad I have to make all people around me sure that I'm not some drinker/thief or idiot. So just don't complain and don't give up your membership. It's the worst thing you can do to a club tongue.gif

Thanks!! Anytime you want to the US, I'll show you around and show you what we're really like and you can teach me about Poland!! My husband has been to Poland several times on business and has enjoyed it, except that it has been December and cold!! He says that everyone is very friendly and welcoming. Thanks for reminding me that I shouldn't let them get to me!!tophat.gif

No problem! And thanks, I'll be sure to remember your invitation! smile.gif Maybe it's good that your husband was here in winter because right now I feel like I was in Africa. Temperatures are above 40 (104 °F) and sometimes even 50 °C (122°F) . I can't stand it any longer. Remember to be proud of where you come from!

It really gets my goat when people think India is all about snake charmers, elephants and slums.

India is a great emerging superpower.. in 5-10 years it will be one of the most developed countries in recent times. Indian blood will always run through my veins, regardless of where I was born or currently reside.
