Blackburn Rovers Youth 1 Chelsea FC Youth 0

Chelsea's youth team lost 1-0 in their opening league game of the season away at Blackburn at the weekend. Despite an encouraging performance it was a set piece six minutes from time that proved the lads' undoing.

A late free-kick was swung into a crowded penalty area and it was a home man that diverted the ball into the net, ensuring a miserable trip home for coach Dermot Drummy and his young side.

Chelsea created a number of chances and controlled most of the game against a physical, direct Rovers side, playing some very good football. However the final ball was rarely an accurate one, which leaves something to work on before Nottingham Forest visit on Saturday in the next league game.

Marko Mitrovic went closest for the Blues, closing down a clearance and crossing into the area, where unfortunately nobody was waiting to tap home.

Chelsea were without Josh McEachran, who has been called up to the England Under 17 squad for the forthcoming FA International Tournament, in which they play three games in five days against Italy, Turkey and Portugal. Josh is joined in the squad by 15-year-old schoolboy Nathaniel Chalobah.

Chelsea (4-3-3): Sam Walker; Billy Clifford, Danny Mills, Kenny Strickland, Tom Hayden (sub Aziz Deen-Conteh 75); Conor Clifford, James Ashton (sub Philipp Prosenik 70), Kaby; Milan Lalkovic, Marko Mitrovic, Bobby Devyne.

Chelsea's reserves kick off their new season with a new manager at Brentford on Tuesday evening.

You can see Steve Holland's first game in charge, at home to Aston Villa live and exclusive on Chelsea TV, or alternatively, head down to Griffin Park for the 7.05pm kick-off.
