Michael Mancienne on loan at Wolverhampton

Recommended Posts

Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce that Michael Mancienne today signed a new four-year contract, which will keep him at the club until 2013. The club can also confirm that the 21-year-old defender has today joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on a season-long loan.

The England Under 21 defender played 10 times for Wolves in last season's Championship, and now links up with Mick McCarthy's side as they look to consolidate in the Premier League.

Last season was one of tremendous progress for the versatile defender, who earned a call-up to the full England squad off the back of his form at Molineux before making his Chelsea debut away at Watford in the FA Cup on Valentine's Day.

The 21-year-old, who can also play in holding midfield, went on to make six appearances in our colours under Guus Hiddink, including in the Champions League against Juventus.

Prior to Wolves, Mancienne played 61 times on loan at QPR between 2006 and 2008.

Defender will see out loan deal says chief executive

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey is confident Chelsea's transfer embargo will not affect Michael Mancienne's loan at the club.

The Blues were stunned on Thursday as Fifa imposed atransfer ban stretching over two transfer windows, which prohibits anyincomings until January 2011.

Irregular transfer dealing in the signing of teenager Gael Kakutaspacer.gifwas the reason for the ban, after the Blues were found guilty ofinducing the 18-year-old into breaching his contract with French clubLens.

The ban, which the club plan to appeal against, may meanChelsea resorting to using many of their younger players if injuriestake their toll and Manciennespacer.gif is one of the starlets held in high regard at Stamford Bridge.

Mancienne,21, signed a season-long loan at Wolves with Chelsea inserting anemergency recall clause which could be activated in January.

However,Moxey has brushed aside fears of a recall and has reassured Wolves fansthat Mancienne is fully focused on his task at Molineux.

He told the Express and Star:"Obviously, player contract stability is of paramount importance toeveryone in the Premier League and the last thing we want is to seeMichael leave.

"We have got Michael here and we'd like to keephim for the season. No-one should get too excited about this situation, because Chelsea are appealing and Michael is here to play football. Wedo not necessarily see this as affecting Michael's position."

Headded: "We've got nothing to say in regard to Chelsea's situation, especially as we have got one of their young players. It's none of ourbusiness."

Michael Mancienne wants to battle for a first-team spot at Chelsea but would be happy to return to Wolves for a second season on loan if it helps with his development as a player. Mancienne is at Molineux until the end of the current campaign and, although primarily a central defender, he has started to create a favourable impression in a holding midfield role.

He had one of his best games for Mick McCarthy's side when operating just in front of the back four and keeping Steven Gerrard quiet during the goalless home draw with Liverpool on Tuesday night.

In an ideal world Mancienne would like to compete for a place in the side at Stamford Bridge when he returns to the Blues.

But he is aware the spell at Wolves has helped him mature as a player and would have no complaints if it continued for a further loan period.

Asked if there was a chance of a permanent move to Wolves, Mancienne said: "I don't think so. I am definitely going back to Chelsea. I want to try and fight for my place.

"I think I have a good chance of getting (in the team). I've just got to keep doing what I'm doing, and keep playing well, and then I think I'll give myself a bigger opportunity of playing in that team.

"I am enjoying playing week in and week out. That is what I need to better myself and improve as a footballer because I can't sit on the bench and improve."

Mancienne added: "I think I made the right decision (coming to Wolves). Coming to Wolves has improved me as a player. I am playing regular football in the best league in the world."

Mancienne conceded another season on loan at Wolves was a possibility.

"If that is what I've got to do, I'll do it," he said. "I'll do anything to play football."

Mancienne is starting to adjust to the midfield role and relished taking on Reds skipper Gerrard, who returned from injury in the goalless draw.

He said: "I'm growing to like the position of central midfield. I've come on for Chelsea a couple of times there and started against Man City for Wolves and now this game.

"It was the same game plan against Steven Gerrard I'd play against anyone. I was pleased with how it went against him - but I only did it with the help of the boys around me.

"But I do enjoy that role of trying to shackle someone, trying to nick the ball in front of people, and getting right up close to someone."

Mancienne feels Wolves will take great heart from holding the revitalised Reds and the point kept them above the bottom three.

He said: "That draw is going to give the boys a massive boost. We basically stopped them from creating anything and I think that has given the boys a big lift for the next couple of games.

"It was hard work for us. It is a testament to us because we all worked hard and stopped them from being a good side."

If I am not wrong, he has excelled more as a Defensive Midfielder than a Centre Back during his Loan term.

He can easily replace Belleti next season. Could play as a Defensive Midfielder behind Essien and Mikel and a Cover for Right Back behind Bosingwa and Ivanovic.

He has alot of potential as a player but when i have watched him play, he tends to get knocked off the ball very easily. I think he needs to bulk up a bit before he will get alot of game time at Chelsea.
