Youths and Reserves complete pre season wins

Recommended Posts

Both Chelsea's reserve and youth sides secured victories in their first round of pre-season friendlies. A Fabio Borini (pictured) double gave the travelling Chelsea reserve side a 2-1 win against Crawley United. The youths hosted Colchester United at Cobham, completing a 3-0 victory over the visitors with a convincing performance.

In a match where the Conference team held their own against Chelsea's second string, Borini opened the scoring with five minutes of the first half to play.

When Crawley keeper Simon Rayner was adjudged to have brought Borini down inside the box, the Italian stepped up to coolly slot home from the penalty spot.

It took only four minutes of the second half for the hosts to equalise when Ben Smith headed home a Simon Rush freekick to the far post.

With 57 minutes played Chelsea were back in the lead when Borini, who had tested Rayner only five minutes earlier, side-stepped the Crawley keeper and tapped home a perfectly-placed Jacopo Sala cross.

Jeffrey Bruma came close to increasing the lead just past the hour mark, breaking down the centre and launching a shot from the edge of the box, and Rayner denied Jacob Mellis to keep the score at 2-1.

The reserves won in front of a large home crowd, which included a strong Chelsea contingent. It was a respectable start to the pre-season friendlies.

Crawley United: Simon Rayner, Sam Rents, Eddie Hutchinson, Chris Giles, Jake Wright, Charles Ademeno, Thomas Pinault, Jamie Cook, Lewis Killen, Glenn Wilson, Barry Cogan.

Subs: Simon Rusk, Danny Forest, Jefferson Louis, Ben Smith, Michael Malcolm, Nick Carter, Adam Quinn, Nick Jordan, Danny Mills, Romane McCrae.

Chelsea: Jan Sebek (Sam Walker 61), Shaun Cummings (Nana Ofori-Twumasi 61), Jeffrey Bruma, Patrick van Aanholt, Ben Gordon (Nikki Ahamed 61), Jack Cork, Liam Bridcutt, Jacob Mellis, Fabio Borini, Gael Kakuta, Jacopo Sala (Daniel Philliskirk 61).

Before the reserves completed their away win, the youths had already recorded a 3-0 victory against Colchester United at Cobham.

'We used all our 16 players for the game,' explained youth team manager Dermot Drummy. 'It was a training game that was really just for fitness but it was a good performance.'

Goals came from Milan Lalkovic, Marko Mitrovic and new Austrian signing Philipp Prosenik.

Goalkeeper Aldi Haxhia took up his role between the posts behind a team including Conor Clifford, Billy Clifford, Aliu Djalo and George Saville, while Billy Knott returned to the side following six months out with a cruciate ligament injury.

'Knott got 30 minutes which was really good,' added Drummy. 'The game was great; we played in the first half with our usual 4-3-3 formation, which worked really well.

'In the second half it got a bit closer with Colchester having a couple of chances but overall it was a good performance.

'Josh McEachran played really well, as did Prosenik and Mills. It was an excellent start to the pre-season, all the boys looked really sharp.'
