Despite two goals from Marko Mitrovic, Chelsea's youth team were beaten 3-2 at Norwich City in their weekend game. The side, younger and less experienced than usual, was made to pay for some individual errors which saw a half-time lead squandered and a late winner conceded.

It was not the ideal way to prepare for FA Youth Cup action at Liverpool in midweek, with consecutive defeats in league action now suffered.

The Blues started well with the wind behind them. First a right-wing corner almost went directly in before some impressive footwork from the home goalkeeper, and then Adam Phillip went close to breaking the deadlock 18 minutes in, but he shot narrowly wide.

Finally a goal did arrive three minutes before half-time when Swedish youth international Mitrovic glanced home a header after a fine cross from the left.

Immediately after the break though, Norwich drew level through Damon Lathrope, whose quick free-kick took everybody by surprise, with goalkeeper Jan Sebek still lining up his wall.

This fired the home side and they were quickly in front when Nick Davey robbed us of possession and fired home off the crossbar. Shortly afterwards Sebek was forced into a flying save from Danny Kelly to keep Chelsea in touch.

An equaliser came 15 minutes from time when Mitrovic tapped home a cross from the left, but there was still time for Norwich to grab a winner when Tom Adeyemi fired home inside the final 10 minutes.

It as a disappointing result for coach Dermot Drummy, but he was impressed with his side's efforts. 'It was a good performance, and they showed an improvement in attitude and spirit.

'At half-time we knew we would be going into a strong wind, so we didn't want to try and play out too much, but that's what happened and we got caught. They are learning but it is quite costly,' he explained, before briefly looking ahead to Thursday's trip to Anfield.

'We haven't got the team until Tuesday because of the reserve game on Monday against Spurs, so we're missing a few more experienced players at the moment. We will start preparing properly on Tuesday and we have to hope the lads stay injury free. Today we had four 16-year-olds on the pitch, which is fantastic for development, but it does make it difficult.'

Chelsea (4-3-3): Jan Sebek; Nikki Ahamed, Rohan Ince, Tom Hayden, Jordan Tabor; Danny Philliskirk ©, Conor Clifford, Jacopo Sala; Adam Phillip, Marko Mitrovic, Milan Lalkovic.
