November 30, 2007Avram Grant hits back at Petit criticismAvram Grant, the Chelsea manager, has criticised Emmanuel Petit after he suggested John Terry and Ashley Cole let England down by missing their country’s final European Championship qualifier. The duo sat out the 3-2 defeat by Croatia at Wembley, a result which saw England fail to qualify for their first major finals in 14 years, but were back for their club the following weekend. But Grant insisted Petit had been wrong with his remarks, particuarly as the former Chelsea midfielder once refused to fly out to Israel for a Uefa Cup match because he thought it was too dangerous. “I know that my players did everything to play in the England national team," Grant said. "We can judge Emmanuel Petit how he behaved as a player and John Terry behaved as the captain of the national team. “Remember that before the Russia game everybody said to John, including the doctor, that his chances to be fit were 50-50 but he decided to train and because of this he missed six weeks of training. “So this was not the right thing to say - especially from Petit.”
