I don't understand why anybody has not brought Alex Telles if his release clause is that. I haven't seen much of him but from what I understand he is very highly rated.

Is somebody like Chilwell worth more than double him? The Portuguese league may not be the greatest of benchmarks but in today's market, his release clause seems a risk worth taking.

Chilwell will cost £40-50m more, so I tend to agree IF money is going to limit us (which IF we do not drop £120m or so on Sancho and also do NOT sign any CB but Ake (which is a nightamre outcome for me) then there is ZERO reasons to not pay the iron price for Chilwell, especially if we snag Werner for only £25m or Hålandwho si only £17m for our CF

lets say we bag Håland (17m)

and make no move for any CB save for Ake (so so fucking foolish but this is just a 'for example') (40m)

and then say we spend £60-70m on a winger (so no Sancho) (70m)

that is only £117-127m total spent so far

with that amount and then take into account revenues (if we close out all the dregs on loan and then sell AC and Alonso, Barkely, etc dregs from the current 25-man squad) fucking around £450-500m net in transfer revenue (counting Hazard, Morata, etc etc etc etc etc fom the past multiple windows and then this January/Summer 2020 sales and subtracting out Pulisic and Kovacic)

anyway you slice that

we have the goddamn money to buy Chilwell AND a top CB as well (as that is only around £150-160m more for both) on top of the first 3 buys, it is pure gaslighting to say we do not

if we did that (buy Chilwell and say Romagnoli) its still leaves around £200m (£250m IF we buy Telles and not Chilwell) or so in net PROFIT (strictly counting only transfer fees and loan fees) when you count up the multiple windows (which some here will call bollocks on but I do not roll that way, as the bloody  money doesn't disappear and also FFP is over a rolling 3 year window)

if we do fail and just cap it at around 150 to 200m  (if even that high) TOTAL spend for January AND summer that will not shock me, as all I have been lead to believe (new info in the last month or so) tells me the club is now in a pure wealth extraction mode, not a spend and invest large amount of money mode

Obviously, for this window we probably are not going to get Sancho as Dortmund have a fight on their hands for fourth. Only way it may be possible is if he has some sort of clause in his contract that can be activated. That said, I am fairly confident he will come here, unless both CHO and Pulisic do some sort of magic trick that CR7 pulled off in the 06-07 season where he went from very good to insane.

As for transfers in this window I think there are only four viable candidates and that is: Ake, Werner, Haaland and Telles. The reason for this is due to the first three have well documented reasonable/low buy outs, which means no p*ssing about with the clubs and just getting a deal with the player, whilst Telles is in his final 18 months and Porto are a selling club. Obviously, Werner and Haaland are going to be tough as everyone wants them, my money is on Werner to Munich and Haaland to Utd, but we should try at least. That would leave us with Ake and Telles which would be ok if not amazing as both of those players would improve their respective positions; although I must admit I am not entirely sold on Ake.

About Chilwell. Even if we pay 80 mio. to Leicester, why should he leave in winter when his team is currently on such a high form? They are  the closest rivals to Pool at the moment

we cannot get him in January, I am 98% certain unless we somehow conned them into doing an Emerson or Alonso (zero chance on him unfortunately, he could NEVER play in their speedburn football) player plus cash deal (and they might demand another player too, looking at their team they need another winger badly, so it would have to be Willian as we only have Pedro who can also play there and they would never want him now and ZERO chance we give up Pulisic or CHO) If they did demand that, we would then SO have to bang on grab Sancho or some other RW THIS January, which is a nightmare)

I can so see them demanding £50m+  for just the cash part even if we did get them to take Emerson and Willian (which puts the total valuation we would have paid for Chilwell at near or over £100m, which is MADNESS for a left back, even Robertson)

I'm starting to welcome the idea of Ake even if I'm not sold entirely on him. We can recoup most of the money selling Christensen or Zouma in the summer and if Ake does flop I'm pretty certain we can recoup at least 20 mil for him.

zero issues, in fact I am completely in favour of this BUT we simply must sell both Zouma and AC by end of summer and grab an actual WC CB to go with Ake as well, with Ake as the AC replacement, and the WC CB the Zouma replacement

Zouma is never going to be actual starting Chels level (on an actual great Chels team) zero chance, we have seen YEARS of him, and he just doesn't have it, and he is bloody 25 now, in his true peak years, he is so not a youngster anymore, Zouma is good for the rest of the year, but then bye-bye baby

Depends how Rudiger comes back if he is playing like before than one of AC/Zouma could remain another season as backup so we can use all the money on Sancho, ST, LB and worry the summer afterwards about upgrading the CB.

AC sale basically covers Ake buy or pretty close

Zouma sale funds around of an actual WC CB buy

so only £40-50m total for a massive upgrade at 2 CB's that sorts it for year

Ake alone doesn't cut it and we have an absolute shit tonne of money bult up (and more incoming as we sell off the loanee dregs and the other dregs on the main team)

IF we play it smart and grab either Håland (£17m release clause) or Werner (£25m RC) at CF

we have sorted 3 massive positions (CF and 2 new CB's) for only around £20m to £40m total net spend (for all THREE, the 2 new CB's and the CF) after we dump Giroud (£5m or in January and maybe a wee bit more, maybe 10m, as like 10 clubs want him) and then Bats in the summer unless we grab the CF in January (Håland far more likely then) which makes it SO easy to sell Bats NOW as well as so many teams will kill for him mid season

that is smart football management

and leaves an absolute TONNE of cash to address LB, RW and DMF (DMF probably waiting until 2021)

If the club and Lampard definitely want to bring Ake back, it's most logical to bring him back in January. With the buy back clause it should be a pretty straightforward deal to execute.

But what it would give is the second half of this season to determine just how good Ake is, another 6 months of development for Tomori and hopefully to answer the question of how much difference Rudiger makes to this backline.

It will go a long way to determining whether we need to go back into the market in the summer for another defender or not.

Does Ake ever play LB and/or DMF anymore? According to whoscored only 1 time at LB this season. Would he still efficiently fill a role of a swiss army knife in 3 positions, or is he a pure CB now? I like the idea of having him as a squad player for several positions, not a fan of the idea of having him as a starting CB.

If we can sell Zouma and Christensen, I would like us to go for a strong starting quality CB. Tomori and Ake backing up, competing with and learning from Rüdiger and that new CB, I wouldn't mind that.

Sell AC this January and bring in Ake. Sell Zouma in the summer and bring in a new CB that would elevate our level.

@Vesper realistically who could that be in the summer? I know you have posted about them (I admit I often skip through your long posts) but having your take on my above proposal interests me no matter how long the post shall be. :P

None of the WC CB's can be done in January with the possible (still crazy hard) exception of Romagnoli (as AC are in the bottom half of the Serie A table and are so doubtful for any Europe at all next year)

I am all in for Romagnoli as my first target as he is left-footed (so gives balance and left footed CB's are HARD to find who are already WC) and so good on the ball, strong, and more than decent size (less than an inch shorter than Zouma) and AC Milan are shit now and have FFP issues. He is their captain, but if he can be convinced of our project I think he would be a superb buy.

Ibrahima Konaté is right-footed, and is the biggest on here by far (2 inches taller than Zouma, he is 6 feet, 4 and a half inches) and would be the least costly I think (he is currently injured though) He has the most upside here as well, as he only turned 20 in May

the next two are arguably the best of the lot (ATM), but insanely expensive (both will be around £100m a piece)

Milan Skriniar is right-footed and will cost a shit tonne but is also WC in most regards, he is my 3rd choice overall (maybe 2nd IF Konate looks to be injury-prone, but that remains to be seen)

José Giménez is right-footed and has a £101m release clause and I do have to say he has not been as effective this season without his national teammate and mentor, Godin (IF Godin was 24, 25yo he would instantly be my number one on this entire list, he is a fucking warrior and so so skilled, but alas, he turns 34yo in February).

Rúben Dias's release clause was raised to 100m euros (£88m at present FOREX rates) and Benfica has told all to pay that or fuck off, so he is off the board for me. His downside is he has only played in a shit league and at 88m quid, that is a crazy gamble.

Dayot Upamecano, who is also right-footed, is a great CB, but I would deffo take Konate over him, given the choice, but he is also class

The only new add I might put in is Caglar Söyüncü from Leicester, as he has looked a superb young (turned 23yo 6 and half months ago)  EPL CB, but if we are also going after Chilwell, then I do not see the Foxes letting both go in the same summer window unless we said here is £150m (or maybe even more), give us Caglar and Ben. I think that is at least £30m or so overpay which is a shedload of cash. He is also right-footed.

Koulibaly (30yo in 18 months) is now too old for the price Napoli will demand IMHO, and there is less than ZERO ZERO chance on Van Dijk (obviously), Laporte, Lucas Hernández (who is still my dream LB (even over Chilwell), not at CB as much), his teammate, the 1.95m BEAST Niklas Süle, Clément Lenglet, Éder Militão, and finally Matthijs de Ligt (who has been poor anyway so far at Juve)

Raphaël Varane and Marquinhos are pipe dreams, but round out my list of WC CB's and MAYBE could be prised away but it would take dangling Kante in the mix and that is NOT happening.

that is every WC CB on my board (fuck Stones and Maguire) as we have Rudiger already

Ake is left-footed btw, and deffo a cut below all above, plus he is 3 cms shorter than I am in my bare feet, lol (He is only 1.80m) but I do think swapping out AC for him is brilliant business, just not enough. Zouma has to go IMHO, and Everton or another EPL team will so cough up at least £40m for him, which would come close to or equal to paying half of Romagnoli or Konate's transfer fee.

Samuel Umtiti looks perma-damaged and I would not go near him atm

Stefan de Vrij turns 29yo the middle of next season, and is deffo a cut below Skriniar anyway

Nikola Milenkovic is another huge (1.95m) beast, but has stalled a bit in his rapid rise at Fiorentina (he is only 22yo (turned 22 two months ago) still though)

Iñigo Martínez is now too old (one month older than Koulibaly) but 3 years ago would have been a great left-foot CB pickup, so so underrated

Jonathan Tah is huge (1.95m) but has not impressed me overall in the years I have watched him, he doesn't have that killer edge

Manuel Akanji is silky smooth but I am not convinced he is EPL level tough (he is like a 4cm taller version of Ake, but less aggressive, right-footed, and is not the overall athlete Ake is)

2 last ones, teens for the future

Benoît Badiashile, 18yo giant (1.94m) , left footer CB on AS Monaco

deffo worth watching for the future, we are scouting him so at least there is hope, lolol

Strahinja Pavlovic , same, 18yo, 1.94m, left footed monster from Partizan Belgrade BUT Monaco just bought him for 10m euros so those two fucking tanks are soon teammates come January

my father is super high on both (he lives part-time in Monaco and has been a season ticket holder for ages)

hope my LONG post helped!!!

cheers

Let's go for Romagnoli then! :P How much do you think he would cost?

100m euros max (£84m as the pound is surging so update dias to 84m quid release clause) should do it

90m euros on the low end (£76m)

76ish million quid would be my target price

or toss in makeweight even, dog knows we have a shit tonne to offer

he is the best overall option and is a great spirit to have as well, he is fucking relentless and is wasted at that now-shit club (that he LOVES though and is captain of though)

surely he doesn't want to piss away his prime years toiling to just finish top 6 or 8
