Because Chelsea was sold recently they can use that evaluation to ask for more for Liverpool.

This is one of two reasons they are selling. They saw our price and want similar. Other reason is disappointment over failed Super League project.

It is not really about buying players every now and then, it is about bringing out the best in them. You can't buy a player and then limits his ability with a very poor style of play. Then we start saying let's buy Mr X and Q. I see no point in it. If Halaand was here with the way we play, he would struggle.

I think players like Haaland would rip it up anywhere but when we sign players purely on potential like Havertz, Pulisic who show signs here and there but are still inconsistent they get lost here same as those with nice highlight reels in tinpot leagues like k2 and Ziyech or system reliant  players like Sterling or Werner

the only players who work regularly for us are those who have obvious world class ability , maturity and consistency beyond their years such as Kante, RJ or those who identify with the club and make up for lack of talent with mentality and passion like Azpi, Mount

we desperately have to make sure we only buy players from the latter categories

Quite right. In the end it comes down to a simple requirement; buy good footballers irrespective of the size of their reputations. Doing this is about judgement and discipline. The judgement to recognise high quality players, and the discipline not to settle for less.

  • For all positions technical excellence is an entry level requirement. You are not automatically in if you have it, but you are automatically out if you don't.
  • Technical excellence is best judged by the ease and efficiency with which a footballer carries out the simple tasks not the flashy stuff.
  • Once a transfer target passes the technical excellence test then, and only then, look for the other attributes you want.

You have made some good points here. What I do not agree is the fact that a player like Haaland can do it here. Mehn we rarely create chances for our players upfront. Creativity in our midfield is almost inexistent. All we do is passing sideways and backwards recycling possession. We aren't direct at all and our build up is quite slow. World class strikers would suffer in our pattern of play. No creativity

Yes and no, world class strikers impose such a confidence in teams, teams are willing to hit balls they wouldn't because they no who's up top. If you have noticed lately our movement is so slow and stale, also players like haaland scare defences to death which then opens massive holes that wouldn't normally be there.

Yes top strikers scare defences to death only in a functional system that bring out the best in them. So many of our attackers have become a mediocre of themselves in our team. Example Sterling used to be above average and a force to reckon with while at Liverpool and later at Man City and those teams are right here in the premier league. Over here he looks quite average. Same can be said of some other attacking players in our squad who were superstars at their former clubs and am sure will still be superstars in their next club after us. Why do goals dry up for most top high scoring players which we buy?

I do think It is because we hardly think of attacking the opponent. Or does the coach tell them to play that way?

Can't he tell his players to attack in games? So many things I do not understand.

Watching our games looks quite funny these days. These guys passes the ball in their half as if points are given for ball possession.

Chelsea TO MOVE FOR ROMEO LAVIA

https://theshedender.com/2022/11/tabloid-talk/Chelsea-romeo-lavia-cfc-the-blues-stamford-bridge-premier-league-man-city-southampton-kante-jorginho/

Chelsea are set to move for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia.

THE LOWDOWN: LAVIA INTEREST

The Saints only signed the 18-year-old in the summer from Manchester City for an initial £10.5m with the fee potentially rising to £14m and a 20% sell-on clause.

Remarkably on the summer deadline day, the Blues tried to sign the Belgian just a month after he moved to the south coast seeing an incredible £50m offer rejected, according to The Sun.

He’s featured only six times this season for the Saints due to injury, but has already proved his importance by scoring in their 2-1 win against Chelsea around the same time as the interest from the West Londoners emerged.

THE LATEST: JANUARY TARGET

According to super-agent Haydn Dodge, who was speaking to Caught Offside, once Todd Boehly organises the senior staff on the board, the midfielder is going to become one of their top targets during the January transfer window.

“Once this change takes place, one of the players at the top of their list to bring in, in January will be Southampton’s Romeo Lavia, who, in my opinion, is a superstar in the making and Belgium’s future captain,” Dodge said.

THE VERDICT: GET HIM IN

The one-time Belgium U21 international would be the perfect answer to potential centre-midfield issues that Graham Potter could face next season with both Jorginho and N’Golo Kante out of contract in the summer.

He’s already starring in the Premier League and showed the Blues the talent he possesses first-hand with his goal and subsequent 7.2 match rating against them in August, so far this season he’s averaged 1.8 interceptions per game and an 88.6% pass success – ranking second highest for both in the Saints squad.

He won’t come cheap with Southampton unsurprisingly not willing to part with their new signing, alongside a precarious position in the league which sees them currently sat in the relegation zone, but seeing him thrive at just 18, the Blues will be interested to see how high he can reach.

Interesting that City's interest is described as a sell on here when it has previously been said to be a buy-back. I'm fully in favour of trying to get this lad and a sell on makes negotiations more straightforward.

I assume it doesn't have to be one or the other. City could well have both within the agreement. Or rather than a buy back, it could be a first refusal clause.

Wouldn't the buy back clause technically include first refusal?   Like let's say club X bids on Lavia prior to the buyback clause kicking in (normally it's a set date like 12 months after the transfer), Southampton would notify City as a courtesy that club X is trying to purchase Lavia and they would be asked whether they want to match the offer.

Even if it is just a sell-on, it actually helps City in the negotiations as let's say Chelsea was to bid 50 million for him and City had a 20% sell on clause, they would only have to spend 40 million for him to get him back to the club (as the sell on clause would be taken off from the transfer fee).

On the other hand, if City have a binding buy-back then they can just exercise it and cut us out altogether if they want to. This is why a sell-on make our life a little easier.

Whatever happens it will be a negotiation. I just would like to see this lad at Chelsea.
