It’s finally here. After a year of impatiently waiting, and constant check-ins with our footwear team (sorry for all those emails Charley), the boot we’ve been waiting for all. year. long. is finally here. Meet the brand new Combat WP Boot from Naglev. Engineered by a sixth-generation family up in the Italian Dolomites, this badass hiker is 100% waterproof and grips the ground just like Humvee tread. It was custom-made for our shop using a durable-yet-lightweight Kevlar® upper that hits just above the ankle for added support. Minimalist, technical, and nearly indestructible, these are bound to be the hardest working boots on the mountain.

Naglev

Northern Italy’s been churning out high-quality footwear for centuries—the foothill region of the Dolomites practically invented the alpine shoe when the sport of mountaineering was born. So it’s no surprise that the Montebelluna-based founders over at Naglev and their six-generations worth of shoemaking experience are industry leaders when it comes to forward-thinking footwear. In fact, they won OutDoor’s Gold Winner (Europe’s most prestigious outdoor industry award) for the Unico—an all-terrain travel shoe that combines technical innovation, clean design, and eco-friendly materials for one hell of a sleek package. The seamless one-piece upper is constructed from ultra-tough Kevlar® fibres that even Batman would drool over, while the integrated merino liner makes for a comfortable glove-like fit. At just 13oz. they don’t look or feel anything like your typical hiker—which is why they’re perfect when you’re on the move.

Story MFG was born out of a desire for a more authentic, fulfilling and kind approach to fashion, the fine balance between aesthetic and sustainability. This manifesto is reflected in the journey from design to production, creating garments that not only limit harm but in some way can positively benefit the earth and the people who create them. The ‘Slow Made’ tagline that the brand consistently adheres to, highlights the processes and skills that go into production, with an emphasis on natural dyes, recycled fabrics and renewable energy.

Steel and concrete steps cut through facade of Stairway House by Nendo

Stairway House by Nendo

A huge faux staircase interrupts the floor plan of this house in Tokyo, which design studio Nendo has created for three generations of the same family.

Stairway House is situated in a quiet residential pocket of Shinjuku, a ward of Tokyo known for its neon-lit buildings, bustling streets and vibrant nightlife scene.

The three-storey home is designed to accommodate three generations of the same family. It replaces a smaller, timber-framed property that had become overshadowed by surrounding apartment buildings.

Stairway House by Nendo

Nendo constructed the new house in a brighter spot at the northern end of the site, being careful to preserve a mature persimmon-fruit tree that was planted by previous occupants.

The more accessible ground floor has been designated to the older couple in the family and their eight pet cats, while the upper two floors of the house have been given to the younger couple and their child.

Stairway House by Nendo

To prevent the two parties from feeling isolated in their respective living quarters, the studio decided to erect a sweeping staircase-like structure that unites every level of the home.

It runs from the back garden, through the glazed rear facade and right up to the top floor.

Stairway House by Nendo

Steel has been used to craft the portion of the structure that's inside Stairway House, while concrete was used to make the outdoor steps.

"Not only does the stairway connect the interior to the yard, or bond one household to another, this structure aims to expand further out to join the environs and the city," Nendo explained.

Stairway House by Nendo

A small playroom for the cats and bathroom facilities are hidden within the structure, as well as an actual staircase that can be used to access the home's higher floors.

The external steps – including those in the gravelled garden – have been dotted with an array of leafy potted plants. Nendo included this feature to evoke the feel of a greenhouse.

The steps also serve as a comfy, sun-soaked lounge spot for the cats throughout the day.

Some of the glazed panels in the gridded facade can also be pushed back to fill the interior with fresh air.

A restrained approach has been taken to decorating the rest of Stairway House.

The majority of the furnishings, such as the breakfast island in the kitchen and study desk, are jet black.

Tall storage shelves are integrated into the white walls, so that inhabitants can neatly stow away their belongings.

Even the front facade of the home has been kept simple: it's completely windowless.

Stairway House by Nendo

Nendo is a multidisciplinary design studio with offices in Tokyo and Milan. Recent work includes a kinetic installation made up of blossom-like raindrops and a clock that morphs into the shape of a perfect cube twice a day.

Stairway House is not the only project to make faux stairs a focal point – last year, Beta Ø Architects inserted a dramatic stepped sculpture into the central void of a home in Madrid.

Staircase swing and material details add flair to Highgate house

Kenwood Lee House by Cousins & Cousins (RIBA house of the year longslist)

A swing suspended from a floating stair and a spiral staircase of polished plaster are some of the details included by architecture studio Cousins & Cousins in a London house.

Designed for a builder who also acted as the main contractor on the project, Kenwood Lee House is defined by a range of materials and textures including brick, concrete, oak, marble and metal.

Located in a conservation area, the front elevation's dimensions and appearance reflect its more traditional neighbours.

In contrast, the rear elevation faces the garden and adjacent woodland with full-height glazing and slim black hardwood shutters.

"In keeping with the Arts and Crafts heritage of the area, we wanted to celebrate the joy of making and an attention to detail and craft which extends throughout,  said Cousins & Cousins director Ben Cousins.

"From the visceral delight of the concrete walls, the alignment of shadow gaps, to the individually crafted bespoke strike plates on the doors."

Kenwood Lee House's four floors are arranged around a triple-height skylit concrete core.

A central floating staircase of oak treads is complete with an indoor swing that hangs underneath.

The front door is reached through a large forecourt, and a short corridor leads past a drawing room and storage space into an L-shaped living, kitchen and dining area.

Here, a full-height glazed wall slides open to the garden.

Stepped back the upper levels make space for the large skylights that illuminate the kitchen.

In the living room, a full-height corner window looks out to the home's forecourt and the street beyond.

Dividing the dining area and living room is a large, double-sided marble fireplace.

A spiral staircase of polished plaster with oak treads leads to the basement.

Downstairs the cinema, swimming pool, guest room and gym are illuminated by natural daylight from a lightwell courtyard planted with a tree.

At first floor level, the landing of the central staircase becomes a mezzanine overlooking the kitchen.

A symmetrical layout has two bedrooms arranged around a central bathroom on either side of the central core.

Above, two linking bridges connect the master bedroom on the second story of Kenwood Lee House northern side with a large dressing room and en suite bathroom to the south.

Walls are finished in white to provide a contrast to the rough, boardmarked concrete of the core.

Three mansard windows protruding from the metal roof draw light into this upper level in another reference to the formal language of the neighbouring homes.

Kenwood Lee House by Cousins & Cousins (RIBA house of the year longslist)

Kenwood Lee House was longlisted for the 2019 RIBA House of the Year award, which was won by a house built on a tight budget in Northern Island.

Based in London, Cousins & Cousins has previously completed several residential and extension projects in the city including a timber-framed extension in Hackney and a brick extension to a Victorian house featuring a large corner window.
