Hudson-Odoi facing big questions after rape allegation

The sentence is just 10 words long but hits you in the pit of your stomach: Callum Hudson-Odoi has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

It has to be pointed out that these are only allegations at this stage. As a short statement released by the Metropolitan Police, who didn’t name the Chelsea winger, goes on to explain, the man in question “was released from custody and bailed to return on a date in mid-June. Enquiries continue”.

When asked about the charges, a representative of Hudson-Odoi, who said he was speaking on the player’s behalf, told MailOnline: “He says he’s innocent. That’s all you need to know. He’s innocent, he hasn’t done anything wrong. We’ve got no other comment to make.” There has been no comment from Chelsea or the 19-year-old himself about the original front-page story by The Sun newspaper.

At the very least, Hudson-Odoi chose to break guidelines that are still in place regarding social distancing by inviting a woman into his home. He is aware of the reality of the coronavirus, having been the first Premier League player to test positive in March.

Whatever happens from now on, Hudson-Odoi has a battle on his hands. He always hoped to be the centre of attention one day but not for things like this. It could be said that the last 12 months haven’t gone according to plan at all.

This time last year he was on crutches following a serious achilles tendon injury, a problem that not only ruled him out of the Europa League final but could also have irreparably damaged his chances of a move to Bayern Munich.

Hudson-Odoi handed in a transfer request in January 2019 and it is understood personal terms with Bayern were close to being agreed before he suffered the rupture against Burnley three months later. Chelsea had never given up hope of keeping the teenager and used his change in fortunes to arrange a new five-year contract worth a basic salary of £120,000-a-week. When it was confirmed in September, the club’s fanbase reacted enthusiastically.

Yet more money inevitably brings greater expectations. Talk that he demanded Eden Hazard’s No 10 shirt following the Belgian’s departure to Real Madrid as part of the negotiations brought even more scrutiny.

In the end, Willian was given No 10, but while a section of fans saw Hudson-Odoi’s request as just a positive sign over confidence levels, others regarded it as arrogance. After all, Hazard was one of the best players in the club’s history and Hudson-Odoi, outstanding academy graduate though he is, had only started his first Premier League game in April.

His return to fitness was much anticipated. The wait ended on September 25 against Grimsby in the EFL Cup third round and there was a goal to mark the occasion. Assists in successive games against Brighton, Lille, Southampton and Newcastle sparked a lot of optimism.

But only two more goals and one more assist came before a hamstring injury in February. Instead of praise, Twitter became a source of stark criticism. The Athletic revealed in December that Hudson-Odoi had even spoken about it with team-mates, looking for some reassurance.

It was clear that the winger was being judged in some quarters on the size of his salary and his age. Inexperience at senior level and the inevitable difficulty of coming back from such a serious injury had not been taken into account.

Coach Frank Lampard spoke out in his defence when asked about the situation following the 2-1 win at Arsenal on December 29, saying: “He’s coming off the back of a big injury and this is certainly a period we have to stick with him through. He’s very young. There was a lot of chat last year about his contract — would he or wouldn’t he? — and now he has signed.

“And now he’s in a period where he has to get his head down and work, and he knows that. Now he has to show what he can be for this club. It’s down to him now.

“I showed faith with him and I’ll continue to do that but we also have to go with him a bit. I’ve sat here and probably been a bit harsh on him at times but now is not the moment to do that because I think I saw an effort and desire, and I’ve seen it in training in the last couple of weeks.”

A first Premier League goal in a fine display against Burnley in January had Lampard enthusing that everyone had seen “the real Callum Hudson-Odoi”, but it is understood there have been occasions when the Chelsea head coach has also lost patience with the protege.

Indeed, sources have told The Athletic that Lampard has held a few meetings with the England international to give him a bit of a talking to, whether it be words of encouragement or a much stronger variety.

There was a sign of apathy toward him from the stands, too. When he was substituted during the home defeat against Southampton on Boxing Day, there were none of the outcries that greeted Maurizio Sarri whenever he made such a move last season. In fact, there were audible groans when Hudson-Odoi gave the ball away for the first goal and the arrival of Christian Pulisic in his place was warmly welcomed.

He has been frustrating at times on the pitch, too. There were too many outings where he played with caution, while examples of beating an opponent with some fancy footwork became few and far between. He has created only five chances all season and completed 48 per cent of his dribbles, while only 12 out of 46 (26.1 per cent) attempted crosses from open play found a team-mate.

The problem is competition at Chelsea is always high. Granted Pedro and Willian will not be there next season, whenever it starts, as their contracts aren’t being renewed, but Pulisic is now fully recovered from various niggles of his own and ready to build on the six goals and five assists he managed in all competitions.

Hakim Ziyech, who is joining from Ajax for an initial £33 million, can play out wide as well as his favoured No 10 role, just like Lampard’s seemingly favourite youngster Mason Mount. Chelsea’s plan before the pandemic struck was to continue to spend on more targets in attacking areas, too. They had initially looked into signing Dries Mertens, showing their hopes to strengthen that position, though now it appears the Belgian will remain at Napoli. Where Hudson-Odoi ranks is up for debate.

Regardless of what happens from here, this scandal has undoubtedly let down Lampard and the club. This is a very unwelcome distraction when complex discussions are continuing about the possibility of football returning next month and training resumes under strict protocols this week.

With football not having any fans watching in the stands for some time yet, Hudson-Odoi will be spared the kind of chants to which players are subjected whenever they have been involved in controversy off the pitch. But there is no hiding place from the 1.1 million followers on Instagram or his 280,000 on Twitter.

Of course, there is another manager to bring into the equation — Gareth Southgate. It will be a while before England play again, but it will be understandable if the national team manager also has concerns about which direction Hudson-Odoi is heading and he will naturally be monitoring any further fall-out from this high-profile indiscretion.

The next update on the legal side of things will have to wait another month after Hudson-Odoi was released on bail. Being back on a training pitch may help serve as a temporary distraction, but Hudson-Odoi won’t be able to escape from the possibility his life and playing career is already at an early crossroads.

Reckon its a plot from model to try get some money or fame or whatever from him and he was stupid to bite for it.

But if he did rape, he should hang.

Yeah , chances are she's an escort given the texts. He could easily afford to bring multiple women over every night,  maybe he's been doing that for all we know. Not like he is ambushing women at the park. I can't see why he'd do it but we'll see

Probably be sold now. Away fans singing 'Rapist' wont go down well

IF he actually did it, and if he is found guilty, his career is bang over. Unsaleable, and mainly because he will be in prison until he is at least 30yo.

I cannot say at all what happened. None of us can, and he gets the presumption of innocence like everyone else. But I also 1005 support the woman's right to have her case heard as well.

I will say this.

We deffo need to plan for THE WORST.

We will could quite possibly soon only have 2 wingers (Puli and Ziyech, and they both are frail likkle lads, deffo not tanks like a Richarlison or CR7 or even mini-tank Eden)

We simply must buy another and maybe resign Pedro or Willian.

Sancho is probably not coming (I think it's like maybe 25% or less he does)  this window, so maybe Samu Chukwueze for a fair price.

Fiorentina's director of football Joe Barone  has confirmed multiple EPL clubs have made official enquires about Federico Chiesa, so we may be one of those.

Dwight McNeil might be an option if we want another English lad, but he is a dice roll IMHO, especially if Burnley hold out for huge money.

We also still hold the option on Jeremie Boga.

If CHO was actualy convicted, there are only two options; Sancho, Boga or even both. If this club means anything serious in the next few years, trying to land Sancho should be the absolute minimum effort from the board. You just dont miss a chance like that. And yet it seems we already left the chat because United is also interested.

CHO IMO is done. I’m not going to be that upset about this because ever since he returned from injury he was constantly bad/average.

Couldn't disagree more, he had a poor couple of months but was on good form after his return and before the recent hiatus.

Why not both?:D

we certainly could have had the cash if the board had not fucked about trying to rape other teams when they made decent offers for dregs and fucked up contract management which led to panic under market value sales, plus made a shit tonne of shit buys

we lost £130m or so via not selling Courtois and Eden in a timely fashion

Marcos Alonso Marina turned down £45m from Real, demanded £55m, now we will be DAMN lucky to get £20m, and likely less, or even nothing, I say we end up losing £30m of the 45m

Willian £65m pure loss from non sale to Barca

we are already up to £225m, just from those cockups

there is Havertz and Sancho right there

we could have purchased Alisson in 2017 for like £50m LESS than Kepa cost in 2018, he was my number one value GK target that year (this year I have two Ugurcan Cakir and Predrag Rajkovic)

Michy Batshuayi   fucking Marina demanding £45m, grr, when we has offers for 35m, we will be lucky to get £15m, so a £20m loss versus what we should have taken

Emerson Palmieri  I will call this a £10m loss from what we could have gotten

so far up to £305m shit away

I am not dealing with Azpi or the CB's, too fluid, we have made no huge money mistakes SO FAR, and I think keeping Azpi was oki, as much as I bitch about him (mostly when we fucking play him at LB!)

the point of thsi rant is strictly money shit away, NOT how much money we can raise by selling players who we need now IF we do not buy anyone (so I am not listing any CB's or Kante, or Jorginho, etc)

so onto the cockups

Bakayoko  we fucking should have taken the reduced £35m offers and called it a day, NOT have fucking Marina demand £42m grrrr, I think we lose £15m of the 35m, so a £20m loss

Drinkwater end of day, counting Salary, we will lose (at minum) £50m (CUNTS all-round!, him, the board, Marina can all fuck right off)

up now to £375m shit away

Moses, we will lose around £15m versus a timely sale high price of £20m we should have done multiple years ago

Pedro I am going to put down as a wash, we got fair use out of him, and never really could have sold him for any sort of big quid

Baba Rahman £20m minimum, shit away

Kenedy  £15m loss minimum versus a timely sale

Zappacosta probably around £10m shit away

Higs, completely shit away over £17m

I cannot count Marco van Ginkel, we and he just had tragic bad luck with massive injuries

Luiz around £23m shit away versus us turning down 35m ) (£32m at the time) euros from PSG in 2018 and the 9m or so we got

£475m shit away in total cockups since summer of 2017, just from those listed in what we got or what we wasted, that is all money we could have had to spend on replacements

even if I am off by a massive £75m (not a chance) it is still £400m down the loo, never to return

and that pile of quid doesn't count sales revenue from other players we might sell, so YES, we so could have easily had both, even after buying replacements for some of those dregs or poor priced sales or good or great players
