Lee Sawyer to Southend on loan

Recommended Posts

Southend United have signed Chelsea midfielder Lee Sawyer on a three month loan this afternoon. Blues boss Steve Tilson has brought in the youngster from the Premier League outfit following the sale of Nicky Bailey last week to Charlton Athletic.

19-year-old Sawyer is an England under 19 youth international and has made the substitute bench of the first team in the Premier League.

Now in his 10th season at Stamford Bridge Sawyer, who turns 20 next month, missed out on the London outfits pre-season tour of the USA in the summer of 2007 through injury.

However, the Leytonstone born midfielder did made seven appearances for Chelsea's reserve side that season and was also a prominent player in their FA Youth Cup run which took the Pensioners to the final.

However, a red card in the semi-finals at Villa Park ruled Sawyer out of the showpiece final against Manchester City last season.
