Paul Canoville

Did anyone else watch the documentary on Paul on Sky Sports?

What an extraordinary man!

The abuse this man suffered at the hands of his own fans and his own team mates was disgusting, losing a child at 9 days old, beating cancer TWICE and beating depression and drug addiction after his career was ended age 25.

He has come through all that and is now helping young kids reach their goals and dreams. Incredible man.

There was a lovely story he told of when he was invited to watch Chelsea in 04. He looked at our team and there were 6 black players in our side. A fan tapped him on the shoulder and said - that's because of you, Paul. Brought a smile to my face.

Someone I know very little about. A man who has paved the way for Chelsea legends from Gullit to Drogba. Simply an incredible man with such an inspiring story.

They always roll him out when any issue of Chelsea fan related racism springs up, for like the thousandth time as if anything remotely close to what Canoville suffered still occurs. It's getting tiresome but very typical of the English media. Plus Sky and co are the biggest bunch of hypocrites.

Would like to watch documentary. Also I read his autobiography a few months ago.

Great film from our dark past.
Anyone know who the player was who abused him? Thought the program showed what a great man he and Pat Nevin are?

David Speedie.

started a thread for him in chelsea gold, no one replied so it was archived.

Saw him play, not his debut, which was blinding by all accounts. Never heard him get racist abuse, but it did happen. That sort of racism was quite common- even amongst players. Aldridges bio recalls how John Barnes got dogs abuse, and how Dalgleish blacked up afterwards saying something like "we're all black now".

Canovilles second season he was quite prolific scorer, not as prolific as his knob though -11kids with 10 different women apparently :o

I knew very little of him before I watched the film other than he was an ex player. It's quite disappointing that the club don't have him more involved.

Obviously off the field his behaviour wasn't acceptable at all, but it is rather understandable why he turnt out like that really.
