John Stones

that's laughable.

It really isn't. Cahill looked like absolute shite last season. The only reason he was shining towards the end of the season was becasue we were playing more defensive. For a conservative style of Football where the centre-backs will get a lot of protection, we have the best CB pairing in the world in Terry & Cahill. But, that shouldn't be what we're aiming for. Stones is a defender who could shine in this system but far above that, he shines when the team is playing a counter-attacking side (something that Cahill struggled with big time last season due to his lack of awareness).

that's laughable.

I'm sorry in advance for getting personal, and I'd probably get warned for this, but you're from Canada, you're footballing highlight is Junior Hoilett, ffs.

Overall, @lionsden had the best opinion here. People are taking the english factor WAY too far. Stones is amazing. His intelligence is something else, but ofcourse, he's English, so he doesn't deserve the hype. When in all fairness, half the english players would have been good if handled by the right coaches.(Exclude Lennon, Carroll and other wood like that)

Let's put aside your ad hominem attack.

"Stones is amazing." What? Thiago Silva is amazing. John Stones is decent. He's not some can't miss talent like Varane (who is also currently decent). Stone's a good CB with good potential.

"Half the english players would have been good if handled by the right coaches." Wild assumption and completely irrelevant to wanting us to sign Stones. It's not descrediting his hype to claim that Cahill is a better CB.

Cahill gets shafted in this team. He's the one that is left out on an island so Terry is protected. Ivanovic basically plays in the opponents half to provide width.

In games where we park the bus, and Ivanovic actually plays in tandem with Cahill, it's a completely different story.

You hear Gary Neville talk all the time about the space between a fullback and center-back as being the most important factor in defending. Well, if you haven't noticed, Ivanovic and Cahill are always miles apart, while Azpi is tucked in tight to Terry.

Stones isn't really a requirement and that 30m can be better spent.

ON what exactly?

And I very well know Ivanovic and Cahill's weaknesses. To say Cahill is isolated, when his backing off is one the reasons we have received a couple of goals and overall his man marking is pretty shite. His tackles are good, yes, but in 2 years time Stones will be better.

Varane is not a must buy talent. The fact that he is in Real, makes it enough to make him cost a fortune, not to mention that he is incredibly overhyped, due to good aerial duels and pace. Something that comes hard for a normal CB.

Cahill is so unproactive , that he gets completely destroyed by rubbish players like fraser Campbel 1 on 1. He doesn't get the same protections as terry , but he wouldn't need it , if he wasn't so poor. We need centre backs who can cope 1 on 1.

Looks like Everton getting the money they gave us for lukaku...

If we buy him, I hope to god that Mourinho will actually put him into the team. Having him alongside Terry will be valuable to a player already showing remarkable ability. If he's bought just to be benched then this a horrible idea for both club and player alike!

I'm positive we'll get him , Everton could turn 30m into 3 or 4 good defenders / players (for their standards)

You are fine with paying 30m for a 20 year old?

Azpi: 7m

Cahill: 7m

Ivanovic: 9.7m

Zouma: 12m

Luis: 15m

That's what a a proper defender goes for.

United just signed Darmian for 12.7m.

English teams sell young players at a ridiculous price.

I'd buy young European prospects at the 10-20m price range, and buy established English players for homegrown quota after they've had their 15m fee for potential future ability tax taken off.

30m is ridiculous. we laughed at PSG paying 40m for Luiz, who was a Brazil International, Champions League winner, and a big part of our team already, both as a CDM and as CB.

This is a joke.
