Centre midfield will be the reason why Chelsea don't qualify for Champions League next season. It all started with re-signing Lampard and continued with not signing another experienced player in the summer, then over-using Lampard as a starter. The fact is, Chelsea's attack has been slowed in previous seasons by its centre midfield --and NOT because of Ramires.I was hoping that Roy Hodgson would give Fabian Delph a chance in center midfield because it might mean that Lampard doesn't go to Brazil and that he's not coming into training with bright eyes ready to be Jose's starter this season--but I guess that's a dream.Third season running where Chelsea are desperate to make the top four and I don't think the Blues will cut it this season. Phil Driver 503 Posted December 1, 2013 Share Posted December 1, 2013 We need the same energy and class we saw at West Ham ,we do not need to play a system where we have a player who we are told protects the back four and when the time comes for the back four to need protecting like at Basle and Spurs their is no protection on show ,we need to press and make their sitter look stupid as Basle did to ours where we were sretched with big gaps between our back four , sitter and the midfield and attack, let our class players take control like at West Ham . Our line up will be very important we can sit deep and let Southampton expose our lack of cover in front of the back four (this is how they play) or we can squeeze them up the pitch and get behind their lines and let our three AM's get to work with our midfield duo backing them and feeding them with quick early passes. A slow sideways game is not what we need and they will be all over us if we try that. As long as our game plan is designed to take the game to Southampton we will be fine sit and show our weakness and we will struggle for rhythm and lack purpose. Jose needs to go with his head on this and not get sucked into the myths that stiil surround the clubs formation,the days of getting ten behind the ball and defending are gone with the players we have been signing ,five number 10's in a squad are not suited to that. The team that imposes themselves on todays game will win and that will not be Chelsea if we allow them to press as our flair players are not best when being asked to help out at the back.
