Chelsea are set to beat Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund to the signature of German U-17 international Julian Brandt, reports The Daily Star.

Brandt, 17, who currently plays for German side Wolfsburg in the Bundsliga, has recently rejected a new long term contract extension to stay at the Volkswagen Arena, but has decided to honour his current contract which expires at the end of this season, where he will then be a free agent.

“Julian Brandt has turned down the offer to sign a new contract with VfL Wolfsburg,” a Wolfsburg spokesperson told Deutsche Presseagentur.

“As he is out of contract at the end of the campaign, Julian Brandt will therefore depart from VfL Wolfsburg.”

If Mourinho were to sign the young striker, Brandt will be the fifth German to represent The Blues after, Robert Huth, Michael Ballack, Marko Marin and André Schürrle.

This looks really likely to happen. Always good to have more young talent in the squad...and more Germans! :D

Hope so but reports in germany say he's off to either Leverkusen or Dortmund.. <_<

Not sure why we need more youngsters...particularly in the attacking positions.

If we are looking to sign youngsters, our main priority should be Luke Shaw.

Signing a younth team striker for free isn't really the same type of transfer as a £20 million purchase of a left-back who would be expecting first-team action from the get-go. I agree we should get Shaw but highly-rate young Germans are usually a decent investment.

Tbh, these days I hardly get any amount of excitement when Chelsea go after a new youngster for the team. Especially after Eddie Newton basically confirmed that most youngsters are groomed so that they could be sold for a profit. Its good business, but hardly exciting stuff as it does nothing for the first team.

Have you seen him play?

Once, he played in an U19 international game, but I don't remember his performance, which at least means it wasn't that impressive. He looks like a decent player, A signing in the ink of BAmford. I hear he has been really prolific in the A-Jugend Bundesliga but that does not necessarily mean anything.

I actually don't see him breaking through but 17year olds who have shown less talent then him have, so what do we now.

a striker? i heard he was a winger

Same but I suppose most German wingers are more than capable of playing as forwards in some capacity like Muller, Schurrle, Podolski, Reus etc. Anyway has he played any first team football with Wolfsburg?
