Reading Youth 2 Chelsea Youth 1

Recommended Posts

Chelsea's Under 18s slipped to a league defeat at the weekend after finding a two-goal deficit by quarter of the way through the game too much to overturn.

A side that showed 11 changes from the one that began the FA Youth Cup final first leg commenced the game badly by conceding after only 50 seconds. From a free-kick on left-hand side, Frank Nouble lost his man at the far post, leading to a scramble. Niclas Heimann in the Chelsea goal made a block but Reading put in the rebound.

Halfway through the first-half, Heimann came out for a ball over the top but Reading's chasing winger was quick. The Chelsea keeper went to intervene with his feet rather than his hands, the opposing player nudged the ball past and was brought down. The penalty was converted.

Just before half time, Nouble made a good run down then left followed by a decent cross in and Nikki Ahamed (pictured) finished at the back post for his second goal of the season. Chelsea came close to an equaliser when substitute Morten Nielsen shot powerfully but the keeper pulled off a very good save to his right.

Coach Paul Clement says: 'Despite going behind, it was mostly our possession in the first half but Reading lined up 4-5-1, defended deep, and although they created very little, we found it difficult to break them down.

'We had a really good chance late on and it was a fantastic save from Morten and I would say we deserved the draw because we tried to play football, but ultimately our two mistakes cost us.'

Chelsea Niclas Heimann; Tom Taiwo ©, Shaun Cummings, Jack Saville, Billy-Joe King; Jordan Hibbert, Daniel Philliskirk, Fabio Borini (Jacob Mellis); Frank Nouble (Morten Nielsen ), Adam Phillip, Nikki Ahamed (Nana Ofori-Twumasi).

The youth team are next in action on Tuesday when they play Ipswich at Cobham with a noon kick-off.

The second leg of the FA Youth Cup final away to Man City is on Wednesday 16 April with a 7.45pm kick-off and is live on Sky Sports.
