Chelsea Youth 2 Watford Youth 3

Recommended Posts

After a good first-half display and having established a lead, the Chelsea youth side paid the price for a sloppy second-half display in this league game.

Adam Phillip opened the scoring 10 minutes before the break, finishing well after Jacob Mellis had driven forward from the back and slipped the ball through to the scorer who had run wide. It was a goal reminiscent of Phillp's against Millwall a fortnight ago.

Shortly after the break, Watford equalised after counter-attacking from a Chelsea corner and then immediately after, took the lead from a corner of their own. The young Blues switched off, Watford played it to the back post, marking was lost and they headed in.

Five minutes later, a ball over the top breached the Chelsea defence, keeper Niclas Heimann was caught in two minds and the Watford centre-forward flicked it past and then into an empty net to make it 3-1.

With six minutes to go, Frank Nouble (pictured), on the right-hand side, jinked and feinted and with his left foot, found the top corner - but the damage had already been done.

Coach Paul Clement reports:

'We played really well in the first-half, passed the ball excellently, created chances but maybe lacked a little killer instinct.

'But it was 1-0 at half-time and we said just keep doing more of the same and we would win the game. We came our second-half and were absolutely awful. Poor concentration and I'd question the attitudes of some of the players.

'For the last 20 minutes, we took a defender off and went 3-4-3 and improved. We created chances and scored. We told the players how disappointed we were with them in the second-half. It reminded me of West Ham early in the year when we came out in the second-half and were not at the races.

'Morten Nielsen came off with an injury and we are not sure about him for Wednesday. Nikki Ahamed picked up a bit of a groin strain but apart from that we are alright as we prepare for Youth Cup.'

The FA Youth Cup semi-final second leg is at Villa Park on Wednesday, kick-off 7pm.

It is live on Chelsea TV.
