the one thing that frustrates me from these preseason friendlies so far is the fact that when the ball is around the box, lukaku isn't making those runs in behind the defence or really giving any option, he just waits. However, with marin although he seems to always cut inside, we havent had a player like that since robben, and that's a good thing to have in my opinion, even if it hasn't looked too successful so far.

I think we had effectively 6 midfielders, so we had more space, and time to get crosses in... Shame Piazon isn't the best in the air, but it was a bit ironic, when our big tall striker comes off we start getting him some good balls in.

We have a tendency to do things the opposite. Last season IIRC, when Drogba was on the pitch, we hardly looked to cross the ball to him. However, when Torres is on, we suddenly started putting more crosses in!

Maybe because piazon was making the movements that warrants crossing which lukaku dont do. IMO

A backup forward strikes me as a near necessity. Lukaku still looks a little too sluggish and probably needs an extended run of games to shake off that rustiness, something which neither our reserves nor first team can provide him with. Sturridge is probably ahead of him in the pecking order but he himself is yet to show he can cut it there at Chelsea. Torres is a flat track bully at this point, hopefully he comes good this year.

Some of the reaction is weird. I was pissed off we lost but we played well against PSG and we should be judged on that more than this game, against 20 players that have played around 20 season games already and are all in the peak of their fitness. We played ok, we controlled possession and if our final ball was better, we would've comfortably won the game i think. They got a lucky opener and a very lucky winner. The only concern for me was how easily they got beyond our back line tho because that's not how we operate at all.

Also, using lots of different players changes things too as some players who played aren't actually going to be a full part of next season probably and we know who they are. Lukaku did some good things but he's not really there yet, his first touch and distribution isn't the best but that will develop. Hazard was poor, kept trying stupid fancy things that came off around 0% and Marin was too predictable although still looked dangerous despite that.

We certainly didn't deserve to lose the game but the game on Saturday will be better for us i think, with a proper proven striker and hopefully the first chance to see Robbie's first choice line up for an hour. We always do pretty well against Milan in pre season.

The Community Shield will show us where we are and what our chances are next season. It's kind of a friendly but an important friendly and a big signal of intent for the upcoming season. I'm looking forward to that.

That reading game was funny that 2-2. Maybe we'll do something similar against Brighton then win another double. We won the Charity Shield too after the reading game.

My main focus right now is on the Community Shield, it's a nice thing to win.
