Modric's Ballon d'Or was 100% WC and RM winning three CL's in a row (and that was much more CR7 IMHO)

One of the worst Ballon d'Or winners in my lifetime IMHO.

Jean-Pierre Papin was before I was born. Michael Owen was probably a weaker one than Modric (he didnt even score 20 league goals in 2000-1, in fact he NEVER scored 20 league goals in a season, Raul got fucked that year)

Modric's was less about his performances that year, and more an appreciation of a number of years performing as one of the best midfielders of his ilk this generation. Difficult to say whether this justifies his winning of it.

I think this whole generation it's difficult to look past Ronaldo and Messi at all with the numbers they put up. In any other generation, Modric probably wouldn't be argued.

He really shouldn't have won it seeing as Croatia failed to get over the final hurdle. If winning medals was the main criteria, Varane should have been the obvious winner.

Modric didnt have goals nor Messi/Ronaldo ruthlesness.

Hazard can very well win balondor in a better team.

He's been part of arguably the best NT around for a number of years. They have only shown up once, so the excuse should be a moot at some point.

Modric plays in a deep midfield role though, and I do think Croatia reaching the final played a huge part in the decision making. Similar to Cannavaro back in the day.

The problem for Hazard is he plays in a similar attacking position to the likes of Messi and Ronaldo and his raw numbers simply don't compare to them. If it was anyone like Hazard, Neymar, Bale, etc I think it would have been extremely difficult to justify them over Ronaldo or Messi.

The reason hazard is not the top player some people here wish he were isn’t because of his attacking numbers, or number of goals, or even number of key passes.

Ironically the real reason has been mentioned here over and over again by many ppl... drive or the lack thereof.

in a tough single-elimination game you only have 90min to influence it, and drive goes a long way. That’s why salah is able to do that and hazard can’t. They both have the skill, but only one has the drive.

And then it’s logical that his dedication and desire would not be same in training either. say not spending a lot of time at the gym, or improving oneself at practice. Like learning how to shoot from outside of the box for example.

Well if you go by this there are tons of palyers who deserve it just like that or more. Tbf Modric albeit a great player had a rather mediocre season individually. He let Croatia down several times in the world cup and also allowed Real Midfield to be dominated in midfield most of the time vs strong oppositions.

And yeah I do not think Hazard will win Balon d'Or based on his lack of extreme ambition. NOt that he is not ambitious. NO one is as successful  without ambition. But he does not have this very last bit of channelled self-centeredness and almost autistic obsession with the game messi and ronaldo have. Makes him much more approachable as a human being but not cut out for the individual top price in this era. But if I could chose i would rather be a guy like Hazard who is an undisputed world class player but comes across as if he still enjoys other stuff in life but not win the Balon d'Or than being a self-obsessed football roboter than Messi&Ronaldo who have long proven it all and still cant stop, fired on by their bizarre rivalry.

Eden Hazard says victory in the Europa League final against Arsenal on Wednesday would be the “perfect farewell” to Chelsea if he is to leave the club this summer.

Eden Hazard rules out playing for another English club after Chelsea

Was never in doubt considering all he has done is speak about Real Madrid when asked about moving.... suppose any quote can be turned into an article these days, regardless of how true or untrue it is lol.

“I was a little bit scared when I came, because Didier left immediately and if you have Didier in the team you will win a trophy. But, in the end, I played with top players. If you look at my seven years at Chelsea, we did something amazing together. We won trophies and I am just happy. When I came here I was a baby. Now I am a big man.”

“We have been trying to make Hazard a Real Madrid player for several years. We are working on a project to make people dream again, where we recover our hunger and ambition. I have already lived through this stage before.

“I have a dream that Hazard will arrive this year. Let’s make a good team this year. I have a lot of interest in Hazard coming to Madrid. He’s one of the great footballers. Last year we wanted him, but this year he only has one year left on his contract and it is easier.”

-Florentino Perez; source: Onda Cero via Managing Madrid

Hazard on transfer to Real Madrid: "That's possible. We'll see. It's in the hands of the clubs. But there's a lovely match to play. It's not in my head right now" Asked what if Chelsea compel him to stay:" I don't know. That's a difficult one to answer. A year is long, no?"

I hope we milk them as much as possible. If we want £130m and Madrid are currently at £88m I think a deal will probably be struck at somewhere between £100 - 120m but we should make them sweat.

His arrogance should cost Madrid at least an extra £5m if I was the decision maker at Chelsea.

Real Madrid, Barca and Bayern Munich are horrendous for using the local media (which they pretty much control), club officials talking publicly about other teams players, etc.

If it was an English team they'd be strung up for tapping up.

For all Marina faults, demanding 130m and if she sticks to it, it is fair play to her. 1 year left or not, if Perez really wants him as mentioned above, he should pay the fee we want. £130M is not exactly extortionate in todays market for a player of that calibre. They wait another year and they get him free but at 29 years old.

Its a very fair Price considering the market and the talent at display......pay up or buzz off should be the stance. And no Kova in the deal thanks.

Chelsea accept £115m bid from Real Madrid for Eden Hazard after Roman Abramovich intervention

https://metro.co.uk/2019/05/28/chelsea-accept-115m-bid-real-madrid-eden-hazard-roman-abramovich-intervention-9717545/

Chelsea have finally agreed to allow Eden Hazard to join Real Madrid after agreeing a club record £115million deal for the Belgian winger. Hazard, 28, has one year left on his deal at Stamford Bridge and made it clear to Chelsea’s board in April that he was keen on a move to the Bernabeu. The Belgian wanted to leave Chelsea in 2018 but was convinced to stay at the club by Maurizio Sarri, who promised to let Hazard go 12 months later should he wish to do so. A two-window transfer ban handed to the club threatened to end Hazard’s dream of joining Madrid with Chelsea given some consideration to the prospect of keeping him for a year before letting him leave on a free transfer.

£100m up front with a further £15m in add-ons

Hazard’s wife and his children are already staying in Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duques, a hotel in Madrid. Their objective is to know the city well and also look for houses.

you guys think he's up there with the best from the abramovich era if we win the el tonight.

He's up there regardless of tonight's result.

I'd say after Drogba he's probably been our best buy under Abramovich.

Difficult to make judgements like that though because players like Cech and Ashley Cole were snips and unbelievable but completely different positions and roles in the team.
