Ollie 4,400
I remember my best mate phoning me mentioning we'd been bought by some rich guy. I didn't think anything of it really, i just thought ... yeah, nice bit of money to help out the financial situation a bit and keep us going. I never really expected this drastic change and him to plough so much in.Thanks Roman, here's to the next decade, a more destructive one with more premiership titles and European Cups. More BIG trophies. The last 10 years were just the foundation of what's to come in the future. With the squad we have now and the best manager, we're gonna be the team nobody wants to face. I predict another UCL within 3 seasons and finally that Club World Cup to complete the journey. Chelsea is the place to be right now. Really looking forward to these next 5 years or so. Fernando 6,585
I will just say that as far as Roman goes, this gives him another legacy. He made his billions in Russia, but here he gave himself more image worldwide. This is what I think Roman wanted to achieve in the first place. Cause in one quote where Roman spoke, he said it was not about making money. He was right, it was all about building a legacy!Chelsea has become a powerhouse and made great history, but the name Roman Abramovich will also be know greatly in the history books. Fernando 6,585
I personally had no knowledge of any of this, and it really helps bring into context all these Formula One, and Football links nowadays. He has a couple of good points. This sort of reminds me of the Narco-Football that existed in Colombian a couple of decades back with Pablo Escobar and other drug cartels. Now it is with wealthy rich owners that as he said came into the game not looking to make money but for other reasons. Influx of money has it's good and bad's. Right now we are reaping great benefits, but sooner or later someone will have to pay the bills. And this is when having a good infrastructure will help offset the blow. Having a good academy, big revenues coming in and of course a big stadium. Which the new stadium has been some issues, and lets hope those idiots that own the grounds name will let the club move to a bigger ground. Popular Post! The only place to be 11,313 Posted July 9, 2013 Popular Post! Share Posted July 9, 2013 I personally had no knowledge of any of this, and it really helps bring into context all these Formula One, and Football links nowadays. He has a point about 'highly dubious business practices' but it's naive to think that applies solely to Abramovich. You could go through the owners of any sports team and probably find a few dubious practices where national wealth has been acquired 'immorally' or there are dodgy practices in play.We all know how Roman got his money and we all ignore it or rationalise it to make ourselves feel better. But I also do the same thing when it comes to World Cups and Olympics being awarded or any number of business practices associated with either the Champions League or simply the sponsors of these competitions. The reason we can acquire cheap players from certain nations (especially African nations) is because our country exploited these continents for centuries and are still reaping the rewards. I'd shudder to think of some of the business practices that were commonplace amongst those men (no women of course because we live in a patriarchal society still) who first invested in football clubs. But let's not forget why Matthew Syed was on Sky Sports News - he works for the Times, a newspaper owned by Rupert Murdoch. If he wants to talk about 'highly dubious business practices' then maybe he should also look at who pays his wages each month. He has a point, but he is being very myopic or very naive.
