The Academy recorded an impressive victory away at West Ham on Saturday morning, thanks to a John Swift strike.

The only goal of the game came after Nathaniel Chalobah broke out from the back, playing a ball into schoolboy striker Islam Feruz who turned it first-time to Lewis Baker to find Swift with an inch-perfect through ball between the home central defenders for the midfielder to finish with a rare left-footed strike.

The Blues were under pressure for spells though, and left-back Adam Nditi had to clear off the line twice, the first after Mitchell Beeney had been beaten by a low shot in goal, the second from a set-piece, demonstrating a desire that showed throughout the team.

Chelsea had four late chances to make the victory more comfortable, each time counter-attacking after West Ham pressed for an equaliser, but there would be no further goals, meaning a return to winning ways for Adi Viveash's side.

'It was a clean sheet and I didn't think we'd ever keep one this year, but the back four was probably as strong as we can get,' the coach said afterwards. 'It was a pleasing result and we played very well in a high-level youth game.

'West Ham had their full Youth Cup side out, all their second-years and that includes a couple of England players, so they're a good side who play good football and bring players through so we were pleased to come out winners.

'The draw for the Youth Cup is coming up so to have Todd Kane and Nathaniel in there is good for them to get used to each other.'

The youths return to action on Saturday when they entertain Fulham at Cobham.

Chelsea (4-3-3) Mitchell Beeney; Todd Kane, Nathaniel Chalobah ©, Nathan Ake, Adam Nditi; John Swift, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Lewis Baker; Alex Kiwomya, Islam Feruz (sub Ismail Seremba 75), Amin Affane.
