Chelsea Youth 0 Portsmouth Youth 1

Coming just two days after the FA Youth Cup win and with five players away on junior international duty, it was a much changed Chelsea youth team that slipped to defeat this weekend. Jacob Mellis, Jeffrey Bruma, Frank Nouble, Patrick van Aanholt and Miroslav Stoch have all joined their countries which meant for the first time this season, coach Paul Clement selected the full allocation of three Under 19 players allowable in the Under 18s league.

With no league game for the reserves this week, Shaun Cummings, Carl Magnay and Liam Bridutt played.

Chelsea came in at half time 1-0 down. The young Blues were attacking on the wing but the Portsmouth left-back dispossessed Nikki Ahamed and played the ball down the side of centre-back Carl Magnay for one forward to cross to the other to score.

Chelsea had a good chance in the first half when Adam Phillip got in at the back post but slipped at the crucial moment and shot over.

Two further good chances came in the second half from crosses. An Ahamed (pictured) header went over and then a Lee Sawyer header was also off-target. In the dying moments, Cummings, who had pushed up wide on the right, was played in at the back post but couldn't adjust his feet to get a shot away.

Clement reports: 'We didn't play very well overall. We didn't get to grips with their formation. We played 4-3-3 and they played 4-diamond-2 and they did that very well. We struggled to stop them getting out from the back and also to deal with their four versus our three in midfield.

'At half-time we tried to sort it out without changing our formation and we were much better in the second-half. Based on chances, we were disappointed not to score but overall, Portsmouth deserved the result.'

Chelsea Nicolas Heimann; Shaun Cummings, Carl Magnay, Jack Saville, Jordan Tabor; Liam Bridcutt, Tom Taiwo, Lee Sawyer; Nikki Ahamed (Gaël Kakuta), Fabio Borini (Morten Nielsen), Adam Phillip (Jordan Hibbert).
