Because it allows the club to say "Oh look, we gave our manager who won the league last season the maximum amount of time to achieve the minimum objective". (I would also imagine it voids a massive chunk of Mourinho's pay-off)
I think it's more about the club not wanting to scare off the best replacement for Mourinho, not really about the CL. The fact he has lasted this long tells me the club are really trying to change their image about being trigger happy with managers.

at this point i do feel its best for us to finish 3rd in our CL group and go into the Europa League, if we can get back into form in 2016 we should be able to win the EL and get CL football next season.
