Half of those nutters will have said somewhere that they want their names to be remembered or something along those lines and the media helps create the next mass shooter by repeating his name, interviewing his family...etc. Regarding creating a cultural shift about guns, you can make ad campaigns, add it to curricula and spread awareness in any way possible but it would all be a drop in the ocean unless the way Hollywood portrays gun violence is changed.

But my point wasn't that there shouldn't be less guns or a ban on automatic rifles, but that along with that there needs to be an understanding that any tighter gun laws will be implemented disproportionately against minorities particularly people of color just like drug laws are, and that any any tighter gun restrictions should start with the demilitarization of the police because you can't give the state a monopoly on violence. And that's just the tip of the iceberg, imo...

The thing is talking about guns is the easy to do. But it's really more complex than just that because a )banning guns does not make them disappear and b )the US is not nearly the only country in the world where a large portion of the population are armed to the teeth. For example in Lebanon it would be hard to find a household without a rifle in it but we've only ever had one mass shooting in post civil war history in the 90s. That's not at all to defend their insane gun laws. I'm an anarchist but even I can't for the life of me understand why normal citizens would need assault rifles. But the difficult thing to do would be to look for the root causes of so much widespread violence in the richest nation in history, particularly among the most privileged and dominant demographic that are white makes but also look at how mental illness is treated by society as whole.

Jeez that shooting Las Vegas beyond awful. The US so badly needs to address mental illness and gun control issues more seriously. Thoughts with the families of the victims...
