  1. The best thing about this half is we're only down one goal. This is so deflating.
  2. I question how sincere American politicians are in their faith. Many politicians have switched religions (and switched numerous times). It can make you wonder if they're religious affiliation is changed to suit their electorate. For how over-represented Catholics are in American politics, there's only been one Catholic president, John F. Kennedy.
  3. Never thought I'd see a discussion on antisemitism and the races of Japanese characters side by side
  4. The US has fired Klinsmann! Aufwiedersehen!
  5. I agree. The problem in using "selfishness" to describe this is that selfishness means you are disregarding the act's effect on others.
  6. So then you're arguing that immigrants are selfish because they want to provide a better life for their family, which can come at the cost of society? If that's what you meant, I think I understand now. I don't agree that it's always the case though.
  7. You must have a different definition of "selfish" then. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/selfish 1: concerned excessively or exclusively with oneself : seeking or concentrating on one's own advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard for others 2: arising from concern with one's own welfare or advantage in disregard of others <a selfish act> What I think you're defining selfishness as is putting your wellbeing and interests above that of others, which all humans do. But that doesn't always come at the cost of not having regard for others, which is something that I've always understood selfishness to have.
  8. Self-preservation doesn't come at the cost of being selfish. I think it's possible to both look out for your interests and for the interests of others. It doesn't always work at the same time, but it's hard to categorize a whole species as one or the other.
  9. Call me crazy, but I wouldn't mind Costa getting a yellow card in this match. I'm sure the Spurs match is going to be a fiery affair, and if he were to pick up a card in that match, he'd miss the City fixture. I'd feel a lot more comfortable with him missing Spurs at home than City away.
  10. They're the last team without a loss, so I've been seeing some more "We're the best team" talk. Reminds me of the guy who called in after last season claiming Spurs were the best team last season.
  11. I wish I could point to some specific examples. I just know this has been a common narrative for years. On days when the clubs around us mess up, we fail to fully capitalize on the opportunity.
  12. The wall is not going to be built. The cost to result ratio just doesn't work out. People will find a way into the country. Runners make too much money smuggling to just say, "Crap, a wall. I guess we're done." There's plenty of tunnels that drug smugglers use and if you find and close those, more will be dug. People are estimating that it would cost, at minimum, $25 billion. Regardless of how big of a problem you think illegal immigration is, that is just way too much money that needs to be spent elsewhere. And then there's this: https://www.good.is/articles/what-trumps-wall-looks-like
  13. I get why there are closed primaries. You don't want Republicans voting for an unpopular Democrat, but I'm personally against the entire two-party system. It favors two parties because they're the only ones with the political and financial power. It's the main reason why there's such a division. To make a difference, you have to be either Republican or Democrat, which leads to the liberal/conservative distinction, which both have their connotations that are thrown around by the opposition. You're forcing something that is not black and white to be black and white. Instead, I would like to see proportional representation that would divide congressional seats based on the percentage of votes a party receives. It would allow other parties to have at least some representation in government. A lot of Americans don't identify as Republican or Democrat, but they're forced to because those are the only two that are going to have enough traction to win in a winner-take-all election. It would also allow candidates to be more honest about their position on issues, because they're not having to pander to one side of the spectrum. Bernie could have run as a Socialist instead of getting shafted by the DNC because Hillary seemed like the safer choice.
  14. That didn't take long Donald Trump: I may not repeal Obamacare, President-elect says in major U-turn
  15. I think you'll have to just read stories and do the work to verify yourself. Every news outlet is funded by someone and nothing is going to be bias free. Even scientific research has to be examined for bias. I used to have the feeling that you reap what you sow. You have sex and make a baby, you should pay the consequences. But we are overpopulated. We're living longer and have better health overall. While that's happening, we're also consuming more resources at a higher rate. We're tearing the Earth apart to get its resources. If you want a better life for the future, you should want the population to stop growing at such a high pace. I don't want mandated population control, but I would like to see people have less kids. Part of that is allowing people who don't want to have kids to get abortions. If a person knowingly isn't ready for a child or can't provide a good life for a child, should we be forcing them to further add to the world's population and potentially provide a poor childhood? They could put the child up for adoption, but that doesn't help the population problem. Even when I was moderately pro-life, I made the exception for rape victims and those that would potentially die during labor. Rape is a tricky situation, because proof of sexual assault is hard to come by. Can we please just use protection!? It may be a pain and "take away from the fun" but life is full of trade-offs.
  16. The sad irony in all of this is that, for how pissed off people are about the two choices for presidency, the republican voters and democrat voters are the ones that picked these two. It's not like the parties picked the candidates. People don't want to do their own work and research candidates. They want to watch the news and make their decisions based on the stories they run.
  17. He might as well take this as an opportunity to move to London so he can go to the Bridge regularly.
  18. In the cake case, I agree that the cake maker should have been able to say that they will not bake the cake because it is an inflammatory statement, and that's something they shouldn't put on a cake. If I were them, I would have said that I will not put inflammatory comments on the cake, but would be happy to make a blank cake for them to do whatever they want with. As far as churches, they should never be forced to marry a couple they don't want to and I doubt they ever will. That's what the first amendment guarantees. The government can't interfere with religious functions. It's fairly early days for the whole country, but some states have had legal same-sex marriage for years and no church has ever been forced to conduct a marriage ceremony for same sex couples.
  19. This is the problem with having someone so polarizing. Stuff is thrown around and we have no idea what is right and what is a lie. The American media is quickly falling to the level of football journos.
  20. It's not like we're having a hard time finding midfielders to play. Does Rohr really believe Mikel deserves to start over Matic or Kante? Just because Mikel is your most influential player doesn't mean he is our most influential player. Mikel has been fairly good regarding his lack of playing time. I don't want idiots like Rohr inflating his ego and making this turn ugly.
  21. But one (or even a few) instances of some assholes doesn't mean every private business is going to be subject to this. Trump supporters have done some horrible things since the election, but that doesn't mean every Trump supporter deserves some kind of retaliation. As far as my last comment, it was harsh. Same-sex marriage is something that is a complete no brainer to me. My sister was married to a woman in the past. I saw how some in my extended family react to something that doesn't even affect them. I continue to see people argue against same-sex marriage and question why they care so damn much. You (not you specifically, Kellzfresh) don't want them to get married? That's fine. But there is absolutely no reason that they shouldn't legally be able to get married. Our government is not run by Christianity and it's not run by the Bible. There is no political or secular reason they should not be able to get married, and we have to keep a separation of church and state.
  22. As a government employee, you should be sued if you don't marry them. If you're talking about a church denying them a marriage service, that should be up to them to decide.
