"I think now we must be realistic and understand what our level is," Conte said. "Now we have to struggle to fight for a Champions League place. That is the top [priority]. We must be strong to accept this type of situation.

Chelsea currently lie fourth in the Premier League, 19 points adrift of City after 25 matches.

Conte has described the setbacks his team have encountered this season as proof that the club is in a transition period, having lost influential veterans like Petr Cech, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Petr Cech and Branislav Ivanovic in recent years, replacing them with younger faces.

"We are in a moment that we have to create a basis," Conte added. "We have to build something important. To do this, you must have 15 or 16 players. In the summer we changed eight players. That means you don't have a basis, a great foundation. We must have great patience to understand the moment.

"We lost strong, experienced players in the last few years, so we must have patience to understand that, now, we have to appreciate the moment, be realistic, create a basis and then build something important to face big challenges with the other teams."

I think he indicated that over last transfer windows we actually needed those 8 players for depth, rotation and replacing those who left, but we don't anymore - now we can focus solely on bringing quality.

He is actually always talking about building something for long term, to build strong foundation. But let's ignore that, right? Who cares if our coach wants to build something important for whole next decade? Let's just focus on his criticizing.

We brought in 8 players, but we also let go more than 8 players. And everybody is aware of the policy of our deluded board, 1 player in means 1 player out.
I can say the squad actually looks fine in terms of depth right now, apart from that we have only 3 wingers in Hazard, Pedro and Willian, after letting Musonda go on loan(Barkley is not a winger, he actually hasn't got position in our formarion, something I was saying in the summer when he was close to signing with us).
The problem imo now, is that although we have at least 2 players to compete for position, none of them are quality players, like we have Moses and Zappacosta for RWB, two players who are decent from time to time, but none of them is consistent in delivering a good performances. LWB is the same sh8t, centre backs are quite decent excluding captain Cahill and CM position is complete mess apart from Kante.
Next summer, if it possible offload some of the donkeys that were bought last summer and bring one world class, bring at least one good wing-back(won't happen after Emerson transfer) and buy world class winger, or give a decent chance to Hudson-Odoi, the boy deserves it completely, it's time we show more faith in youngsters.

The board, who got from conte a list with a few potential positions that chelsea need to strength, and they signed the second or third player in each position (Emerson instead of sandro for example),

Or Conte, that wanted those averege players from the beginning.

(We are not talking about contes shit defensive tactics and decisions to play with cahill and baka again and again).

For sure, Conte is responsible for letting Matic go.
