Yes a lot of football fans vastly overrate his defensive play. It's very average and he can be extremely lazy, leaving his partner, mostly Barry, completely exposed and isolated.

I remember Meireles's equalizer against City at The Bridge, Yaya was suppose to be tracking him and let Meireles walk in the box unchallenged.

Sadly Essien's case demonstrates how much damage injuries can do when your game is primarily based on strength and drive. ACL is absolutely the worst type of injury that could have happened to him.

That's a fair point to make. Their midfielders have been over run all game, Modric was also pretty quiet and Ronaldo was just bad. Scored a pen, but nothing went his way, he even missed an open goal!
