Homegrown status

We have 19 non-HG players in the squad but we can only register 17. Which 2 players would you get rid off to stay within the limits?   77 members have voted

Are you sure about that? True that they've affiliated to the league that they've gone to, but it's not like they're unaffiliated with our FA anymore, since they are still a part of Chelsea FC. They're still tied to us regardless of where they're playing, after all.

Yeah, 100% sure. They're still Chelsea players but they're being loaned out to another entity who obtained their playing rights - thus they are representing that club for however long the loan spell is - not Chelsea, until they come back.

I disagree. They're still officially tied to us, even if they're not playing. That makes them affiliated to us.

Oh well, we'll see soon enough I guess. No point in arguing about something I'm not even qualified to talk about.

" The 25-man Premier League squad list must include no more than 17 'non-homegrown' players over the age of 21. 'Homegrown' players are defined as those who irrespective of nationality or age, have been affiliated to the FA or Welsh FA for a period of three seasons or 36 months prior to their 21st birthday...."

So apparently it doesn't matter if they've played in England or not. Even if they'd be playing in the other side of the world, our loanees would still be considered 'Homegrown' because they're still Chelsea players at the end of the day. At least, that's my understanding of it.

Soo...does Courtois qualify? Didn't we get him at 17/18 y/o? Either way though, we should be fine. PVA, Bertrand, Kalas, Ake, Blackman, and Swift and Baker in the coming years we'll be fine. Right?

Of course they're still affiliated with us, maybe registered to play is a better word to use to explain it.

It's not about disagreeing or not, those are the rules... Loan players who are not registered to play at CFC for that season will not have a HG year added to their status if they aren't in the country because they'll be registered to play for the other club in that different country. They aren't under the English FA's jurisdiction in that year, and aren't being trained in England or Wales.

With Cole leaving... this doesn't look great.

Expect PvA, Josh and Jamal Blackman as first-teamers next season.

Don't be surprised if we end up signing some out-of-contract English players like Rodwell or Lescott, either...

I think you're actually right. He did join in 2011. So the link in the OP got it wrong on both occasions: his joining date and his homegrown status. Apologies.

piazon will be under-21 next year. but he will be HG whenever he is registered.

How? He's only spent a year and a half in England so far. He needs to spend at least 3 years in England before he turns 21 to be considered homegrown.

af·fil·i·ate

a person or organization officially attached to a larger body.

^ This is what I'm trying to get at. They're still officially a part of Chelsea FC, right?

I'm sure it comes down to where the player is registered. When you're on loan you're registered with that club for that period.. and that club will be registered to the foreign FA. So officially, Courtois is registered with Atletico Madrid and thus the Spanish FA until he comes back where we register him to Chelsea and thus the FA

i dont think staying in england is what is essential here. the player needs to be

"irrespective of nationality or age, have been affiliated to the FA or Welsh FA for a period of three seasons or 36 months prior to 21st birthday"

which piazon is.

i might be wrong but thats my understanding of the matter.

Exactly! He needs to be "affiliated" to the FA or Welsh FA, meaning he has to be playing for an English or Welsh team. That's why didn't want to send Ake on loan to Vitesse this season so he would stay in England and become a homegrown player.

The problem isn't we need more HG players. The problem is that we can't have more than 17 non HG players. We can have 0 HG players if we want which would mean we can only register those 17 and no more.

The way to solve this is not to get English players just to make up the numbers but rather English players who will actually contribute to the first team.

What's the point of having 3 English Hilarios, when it'd be the same as not having any.

Forget Moses, Bertrand, and the lot. If they can't contribute now nor in the future, they should be sold.

Buy first team or squad English players otherwise save your money.

But by saying 'or squad players' surely Moses, Bertrand and the lot fall under this category. It's not easy to buy HG players to be squad players for an affordable price.. Unless we get them out of contract like Barry et al.

No they don't. I mean squad players who Jose expects to contribute. Players who at worst contribute like Schurrle, Lamps, etc. Not Bertrand, Moses, etc. who will only be given 2-5 games all year.

Could you provide examples of homegrown squad players capable of contributing to Jose's tactics?

All I see is players of similar quality to Bertrand and Moses....as in: solid players for lower-EPL teams

I don't think there are a lot. Chelsea seems to think the same, probably the reason they don't want to overpay for just any homegrown player. Instead they are clearly working on promoting from within. Guys like Ake, Lukaku, etc.

That's my point from my earlier post. Don't overpay or compromise squad strength just to make up homegrown players. Either promote from within (save money) or buy only the ones that will contribute (squad strength). Worst that could happen is that we are forced to register a smaller squad, 23 instead of 25, not a big deal imo.

But I think those players are like Moses and Bertrand. So suggest they won't have a sporadic contribution is harsh.. Bertrand has shown maturity and capability to play as a back up left back many times when we're played him. The champions league final the most prominent.

If anything Lampard is one of those players who you should be looking to not have in for the sake of HG as on the basis of this season his contributions are far less significant, while also taking the place of the youngsters you'd see come into the squad instead.

You're missing the point. I'm not arguing about the actual players. But rather the idea of how we should be looking at homegrown players. We shouldn't be buying players just for the sake of them being homegrown. Buy if they improve the squad and if they happen to be homegrown, even better.

If Jose is going to play Hilario 20 games a season then even he is worth keeping. The actual players we have and their roles is a separate discussion.

Aké stayed with us to be "club trained" i think that's why he didn't go on loan. I think LDN is right with player sent on loan abroad, they can be HomeGrown but not club trained.

Kalas will be HG while being sent to Vitesse but i'm not sure about that

Kalas won't be HG for us, he hasn't spent 3 years in England.
