Willian would prefer to sign a new contract with Chelsea than join Barcelona, sources have told ESPN.

The Brazil international, 31, will become a free agent at the end of the season and can talk to clubs from outside England now with a view to joining them in the summer.

But sources have told ESPN there is no agreement in place with Barcelona. Willian's first choice is to remain in the Premier League with Chelsea because he is settled in England and so are his family.

As it stands, Chelsea are only willing to offer the winger a two-year but Willian is holding out for three years and believes his fitness and lack of injuries mean he can play for several more years at the top level.

ESPN report the 31-year-old winger is keen to remain in west London over a move to FC Barcelona, however, Willian wants a three-year deal at Chelsea instead of the two-year offer the Blues are proposing to the former Anzhi Makhachkala star. The Premier League forward’s current contract with Frank Lampard’s side expires this summer.

Marca reported in the January transfer window via The Daily Mail that Willian would join Barcelona for free in the summer transfer window, but this latest update from ESPN has seemingly changed the direction of the story in a new direction. Yet some Chelsea fans weren’t too pleased about it.

A few supporters on social media are keen on Lampard offloading Willian when his contract expires at the end of this season given the attacker’s age and the emergence of young wingers at the club like Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi.
