Serbian defender Branislav Ivanovic is reportedly close to signing a contract that will see him link up with Chelsea.

The 23-year-old Lokomotiv Moscow centre back would be a welcome addition to a Blues side that has at times struggled to field a back four this term, with injuries and suspensions robbing boss Avram Grant of star men John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho on a regular basis.

Serbian newspaper Blic reports that the player, who captained his country’s Under 21 side to the final of last summer’s European championships, is to undergo a medical in London on Wednesday.

Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Milan have all also been linked with the player who has one goal in nine senior caps for Serbia, but Stamford Bridge now looks to be his new home.

Papers have this one down as virtually a done deal. Would be good to see us bring in someone like this to replace Ben Haim who looks massively suspect. He is young too and looks a very strong lad...
