Flamengo claim Zico's 89 goals in 1979

The Rio de Janeiro club assures that it has documented the Brazilian's goals and next week it will present the evidence to FIFA. "We will fight until the end", says the directive

Flamengo de Rio de Janeiro has protested the record recently attributed to Leo Messi -after surpassing the German Gerd Müller in number of goals in a year (86 achieved by the Argentine on Sunday)-, assuring that his historical idol Zico scored more (89 ) in 1979, as reported on Wednesday by the Lance sports newspaper.

According to Flamengo, Zico scored 81 goals with Flamengo, seven with the Brazilian team and one in a friendly, 33 years ago. "We are impressed because Messi has not yet passed it," said Bruno Lucena, from the Brazilian club's historical heritage research and study institute. "If he had played all year -Zico was injured and was out for a few months-, with absolute certainty he would have scored more than 100 goals," he added.

Always dubious of goal totals from Brazilian sources.when you look at Pele’ career goals total..is like if they haven’t fixed the numbers, then they have counted goals in street football as official.
