We can argue till the cows come home on this but I really don't see what Alonso does that is so WOW that he should be the undisputed starter.

Let's not make as if I have anything against Alonso the person/player. If he had any pace, mobility, agility in him, I wouldn't be sitting here and arguing so much about this. We are the only top side around obsessed with such a slow FB/WB to begin with and would you have complained much at all had we sold Alonso in the summer or in January?

You can keep saying about are we the only top side around with a slow FB/WB and whatever else but thats not the point here??? I am not saying Alonso is Roberto Carlos or whoever.

What my whole point is based on, is performances, which you seem to neglect every time you pipe up about Alonso. Alonso in the games he played has done better than Chilwell did in that poor spell with Frank when he played every week and in the games he has had with Tuchel. That is clear to see. That is why he has started more often and thats why I think based on what Chilwell did today,  why Marcos will start the next games.

Chilwell may be more agile, quicker, take men on etc but if he doesn’t do it in a game how can you justify playing him over someone who’s performing better? I mean the whole Chilwell taking people on thing, how many times today did he just come back inside and pass it sideways/backwards? Thats always a point people make oh he’s better at taking people on, he played 90 minutes today I can’t remember him doing it. He didn’t impress me or look like he is someone who is trying to force themselves into the starting 11.

Alonso is clearly Tuchel’s first choice based on selections under him so far and as long as he keeps performing as he has and Chilwell keeps playing how he has, it wont change anytime soon. Thats not to say Alonso is the best fullback thats lived or whatever but it says more about Chilwell and his performances than anything else.

Also another point unrelated, felt the back 3 were great and we really missed Jorginho. Kante did well to stop some counters and in some moments he did his thing getting the ball back but you could see he gave away some really easy balls in midfield. Particularly first half.

By the way, you come at me on the Alonso-Chilwell selection but thought Jorginho would do well today, especially against United's pressing in the first half. Would have likely ended up with more turnovers and less defensive protection!

Did you see how many passes we gave away? Or how slow things got at times after our start in the first half? Kante did well recovering the ball, stopped a good counter 2nd half but again like v Southampton, in possession, not really effective.

You mentioned Chilwell taking people on but does Alonso do that?

An example of having someone quicker is the ball that he ran onto to create the opportunity for Ziyech in the second half (he should have scored). How often do you see Alonso being able to just simply outpace someone and then play a ball or create a chance for someone?

If Alonso is really Tuchel's first choice or he's as great as you're making him out to be, then why didn't he just start Alonso for this big game?

Yes, I noticed but given United's threat on the counter, it's bloody obvious why Kante started ahead of Jorginho, who is NOT reliable defensively.

Yet he started v Atletico and Spurs? Who primarily counter attack also?

United have more pace in their team...?

Going forward, I don't even think Jorginho's absence made much of a difference considering we barely created much.

No not very often either, that we can agree on but your making this out as if I am saying Alonso does all these things or is Roberto Carlos. I am not and as I said there I will say it again, I am comparing Alonso and Chilwell’s performances. People use this stick to beat Alonso saying he doesnt do these thing’s Chilwell apparently does, yet Chilwell plays and he does nothing? None of these things? He made that one run fair enough but I tend to remember him doing nothing else and didnt actually see any real improvement from the last game he played where he was taken off v Sheffield.

Again as I said (which you’ve obviously chose not to read) I am not making Alonso out to be amazing or a top FB but hes played better than Chilwell recently and thats why I think its clear he will be TT’s first choice until Ben forces TT’s hand, which wont be from todays game.

Also ok he didnt play today yes fair point, but hes played 523 minutes since the start of February. For someone who constantly moaned about Lampard overplaying players etc do you not think its also fair to assume that Tuchel may want to change players based on minutes or even just give someone else a chance? Chance given being more what I think Chilwells appearance was but ultimately a chance he never took.

We had a lot of the ball, I dont know what more you expect Kante to do with the ball than what he did today. We seemed to not have a real control for 30 minutes of the first half and lost easy passes. United may have more pacey players but when you have most of the ball you want to be in control and thats why I felt Jorginho would of been more appropriate because there were moments where we weren’t really.

He played v Spurs and Atletico who are counter attacking teams. Atletico also pressed up high in moments and we played out very well and he was a big part of that. The pace thing, its not like Spurs didn’t have Aurier, Son, Bergjwin, Sissoko who are all very quick when we played them or that Atletico dont have pace in their team either with Lemar, Correa, Felix... I mean United had Greenwood, Rashford, James in attacking areas. Its much and much the same amount of relatively fast players. Obviously some more quick but the points the same.

We can argue all day and will likely never agree on this but I'll just say this, since we're talking about a conventional LB being asked to play in a slightly unfamiliar role of a LWB, maybe some slack should be given especially when said player has only played 1 game here and 1 game there? Even Tuchel has pointed this out and I don't think Chilwell has been a complete disaster in the LWB role either.

If Tuchel wanted to rest Alonso, why didn't he just do it against Southampton last weekend? Or given we have a decent amount of rest days between Atletico and United (4) and United and Liverpool (3) games, why didn't Tuchel just play him today and say rest him against Everton?

I didn't say I expected more from Kante with his passing apart from just being more careful with it. We had no real control in the first half because United decided to press us and they disrupted us well. Jorginho won't have made a difference considering he's bad when under pressure. Getting pressed and losing control of games have been a long standing problem with us, even when we had Fabregas in the team. We don't have a team filled with players who are comfortable on the ball when under pressure.

Then what's your thinking behind Tuchel not playing Jorginho today then?

Atletico only mostly pressed well in the first 10 minutes or so but apart from that, they were mostly content to sit back and defend with the 6-3-1 shape. Kante came on after Giroud scored to help manage Atletico's attacks.

Kante only just came back from injury during that Spurs game period and hence why he didn't start. Jorginho-Kovacic worked well in that game's first half because Spurs were just so passive and sat off us. But when they decided to press high up in the second half, we lost control of the game.
