I look at Mount with England and it only just strengthens my opinion on him that he is just a workhorse.

He gets back and defend, cool. He goes up front, cool. But as an attacking midfielder, what he does is simply not good enough. Where are those clean cut passes that cuts through the defence? Can he take FKs? Can he shoot and make killer shots from range? Can he score more consistently? Can he drive through defences?

Well a month ago he made one that won us the second biggest prize in football, to kick on from scoring the clincer in the semi, for one.

Assists are subjective, Mount has been robbed of many assists this past season and in this tournament by poor finishing, the other end of the scale would be Matic in 16/17 who stat padded assists by happening to the one passing to Hazard just before a wonder goal.

Unless they do it a ridicolous rate like KDB or Fabregas then the quality of assists need looking deeper into.

Not ONE England fan that isn't Chelsea-biased would say Mount is one of their killer players for England. Many times I've heard "Why Mount is starting? Why is Grealish not playing and why is Mount?"

And where was Grealish at Mount's age? Playing in the Championship not long off being part of the worst PL team in years and breaking a record for the longest personal run without a win.

Yes he provides one or two killer passes there and there, but it's as inconsistent as Willian. In fact, I'll say he's close to being a Willian. The only difference is that Willian misplaces a lot of passes.

Willian had little competition at the start of his career here and as soon as much as one capable player (Pedro) came to compete with him he was relegated to third choice winger within a year.

Mount gets picked by every manager he's played for in the face of intense competition and not only that other managers are saying they would also be picking him if he was their player, Mourinho and Sarri the most recent pair.

Actually I would say a fair comparison to Mount would be Pedro, not the 'star' player himself but sure knows how to coexist with them.

It is 2020 and people still think Barkley will become good...

Mount is only 22, still has time to improve. I don’t think it is harsh to see him similar to Willian who regularly gave you 7/10 performances at his best seasons. He was in his prime, Mount is much younger got time to get better.

Any instances? Can't remember many off my head.

It would be nice to know the breakdown of chances created or rather key passes from open play and set pieces by Mount.

Examples from the Euros would be Sterling's hesitation and Kane's sitter vs Croatia.

Didn’t Squawka report only Bruno Fernandes created more chances than Mount last season?

Pretty sure chances created from set pieces were included. Am curious to know what's Mount numbers when it comes to creating from open play.

What makes this more impressive is the other four have their entire teams systems built around getting the (creative) best out of them.

Did you not argue once before about the loose definition or subjective-ness (can't think of the right word/phrase) of chances created?

I actually said it should be used as a more accurate way to judge creativity than the assist stat. You can make the best through pass of all time but are still relying on the player at the other end to do his job for it to go on the assist chart but on the flip side whoever passed to Maradona before that goal against England or Henry before that goal against Spurs got an "assist".

Problem with 'chances created' is the same with your problem about 'assist' because it includes the latter, according to Opta definition. Like the example you gave, Player A can simply make a 5-yard pass to Player B, who then shoots at goal from 30 yards and that will be counted as a chance created.

If we want to judge creativity, then I'd prefer to have at least the chances created broken down to chances created from open play and set pieces because creating from open play requires more than creating from set pieces. In Mount's case, not to devalue his number but it's no surprise that his chances created were high because he also took a lot of our set pieces. The others in that Top 5 also took set pieces for their team, which is why the 'chances created' stat can be misleading (that's the word!) to judge creativity.

No wonder he looked absolutely gassed after having played a mammoth season. Hopefully Southgate the sucker has not completely burned him out

Awful tournament. Thought he’d step up a level after winning the Champions League.

Is it? 5 games - 0 goals - 1 set piece assist for 4th goal against Ukraine. This is pretty much perfect measure of MM. This is how his average 5 games at Chelsea look like.

Tbf he probably did better than Foden did at least… next Gazza my arse. Did nothing.

Mount was quiet all tournament but again, other than Sterling, not as if Englands attackers were exactly great or consistent.

Kane had 2 games where he was good.

Saka one game.

Grealish one real impact off the bench despite the constant ranting and raving about him.

Sancho, the 80m benchwarmer.

And its not that England were the most expansive or progressive team or that their 2 holding midfielders didn’t play sideways as opposed to through the lines into the front players as often as Italy, Spain, Belgium etc either so no surprise none of them really did well bar Sterling who’s goals again probably got him more plaudits.

But again no surprise the same folk taking digs. Excited to see him kick on again with a proper manager in Tuchel. Think hes going to have a better return this season again.

Mason mount is a team fixer.

he makes the team more competitive, which in turn makes it more likely to win silverware.

some folks don’t like that and prefer flashier players, but consider that if it’s not mason it’d have to be another player like him elsewhere. I reckon he’s one of the best at what he does.

we don’t have Messi, Neymar, mbappe… we are not a powerhouse. If we play as equals with them, will lose more often than not. We can level the playing field with intensity, tactics, and smarts -and Mason mount helps with all that.
