He's just so bad on the ball it hurts. It's hard to fault him when his own manager is the one sabotaging him though. Still doesn't make it any easier to watch his displays especially when the likes of Lahm, Alaba, Marcelo, Rodriguez, Luis etc exist

Completely agree, Mourinho kinda kill his game by putting him on the left. The fact that he was not selected in Spain squad kinda prove it.

LOL Azpi is by no means bad on the ball.

May be you are trying to say that he can't overlap on the left or make consistent decent croses with his left foot- which is true and totally expected since he is right footed playing LB.

But being "bad on the ball that it hurts" just LOL

This thread is unbelievably quiet. Thought he was superb defensively today. Kept Mata quiet all game and didn't let anyone else cause us trouble from his side. It really speaks volume that whenever our opponents attack, they usually do it down the left rather than the right.

What's the most pleasing aspect that he's got the superior team mentality, he doesn't want to retreat but push higher up, press opponent and be on the front foot. He doesn't invite pressure on us. Unlike the rest of our defenders he's good platform to build for the future.

Also his stamina is amazing. I am quite sure that he'd even done Ramires in that aspect. Over those 3 years the amount of times when he pushed on and run at full speed even at +85 minutes is stagerring. A warrior, but also modern day warrior with his pressing abilities.

Indeed. He's definitely adept at different approaches to defending - he can put heavy pressure on the player and close the ball down (like he did yesterday) or be a little stand off-ish when needed to be (such as when facing the pacey, skillful wingers). Out of all the defenders we have, he's arguably the only proactive one while the others are reactive than anything.

This guy was immense! Won the ball back 13 times i read somewhere.

His Luis-like pressing to win the ball back and his passing to start the break was a beauty to see, and i'm happy he's doing it more now. Such a shame none of our attacking players were rewarding him for those efforts.

Which begs the question how this team would look with Luis-Azpi fullbacks, both doing the same thing... :o
