César Azpilicueta

Perhaps physicality was the wrong word. I think what I meant was aggression. His technique, consistency and stamina are great. But I think he isn't as aggressive as Azpi when marking. I think he should be a nailed on starter for all European games because he seems completely comfortable there, just that he seems a bit shakier with the more physical and aggressive PL.

And at some point, I would love to see our team try Luis and Azpi together as our starting fullbacks.

Perhaps you got a point, he may lack 'aggresion' but he more than compensates it with his technique and offensive play. I remember watching an interview and they asked him whether a modern fullback should be more offensive. He said if I recall ''the number 1 priority of a fullback is defense"' so surely he prides him self in defending and he came from a team where they made defending an art. He may have a different style of defending to Azpi but he is more than capable of holding his own.

Regardless it a good problem to have especially when teams like Arsenal have shortage of quality defenders, on the contrary we having dillemas on who to exclude. Maybe Dave herd how we criticized him on his lack of offensive play..lol look what he just did in the past weekend, this shhows how he is playing on his toes in order to maintain his place. With that performance there is nothing I can say against the guy he was fantastic

Next Lahm?

As fullback, maybe. But as a player, he has a long way to go. Lahm is also great at passing, vision and ball control, better than most midfielders. Azpi, I think will never have such control on ball, but he can become world class FB (if he isnt one already).

"I was always a striker when I was younger. Sometimes I played on the right wing or at right-back but I was a striker until the age of around 15 or 16.

In the reserve team at Osasuna I sometimes played right-back or left-back, but not regularly. Then, at the age of about 18, I became right-back in the first team"

Azpilicueta continues to convince me that he can't do a job on a consistent basis at left back. Most of the teams we play against play defensively against us, even when they play at home. He offers nothing in these games that Luis cannot! Jose's infatuation with him playing there is really bizarre. I feel bad for Filipe.

Completely agree. Today's game once again showed that Azpi will offer us very little going forward on the left and Ivanovic cannot defend. How does Jose still not see that Luis is the best all-round full back we have and why pay £16m for him if you're not even going to play him? As ludicrous as it may sound I do reckon part of his thinking in buying Luis was to weaken Atletico since he knows that he was an important player for them and they're a big obstacle in the way of CL glory.
