</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:16px;">
	The Argentina international, who turned 21 in July, has signed a long-term deal at Stamford Bridge that runs through to 2032.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:16px;">
	Garnacho already has 93 Premier League appearances to his name and has scored 16 times, including a stunning bicycle kick against Everton that won the 2024 FIFA Puskas Award, having been a regular in Man United’s side for the past two seasons.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:16px;">
	Garnacho said: 'It’s an incredible moment for my family and I to join this great club. I can’t wait to get started. I watched the Club World Cup and to join the world champions is special – we’re the best team in the world! It’s amazing to be here and I’m very happy.'
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:16px;">
	Garnacho was born and grew up in Madrid, and he spent time in the Getafe and Atletico Madrid academies before moving to Manchester in October 2020 as a 16-year-old.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:16px;">
	Following impressive performances for Man United’s youth teams, Garnacho was handed his senior debut as a substitute in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea in April 2022, shortly before his 18th birthday.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:16px;">
	He began to feature more often the following campaign, scoring five goals in 34 appearances in all competitions, among them his first in the Premier League, a last-minute winner away to Fulham.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:16px;">
	By 2023/24, Garnacho had well and truly established himself as a starter at Man United. He netted seven Premier League goals in 36 games, including that memorable strike at Goodison Park and a brace in the dramatic 4-3 Chelsea victory at Stamford Bridge. He also sampled Champions League football for the first time, scoring in a 3-3 draw away to Galatasaray.
</p>

</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:16px;">
	Last season, Garnacho again featured prominently across all competitions, playing 58 games, finding the net on 11 occasions, and providing ten assists. In total, Garnacho registered 48 goal involvements in 144 appearances for the Red Devils.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:16px;">
	First called up to the Argentina squad in March 2023, Garnacho made his senior international debut that summer in a friendly win in Australia. He was a member of Argentina’s squad that won the Copa America in 2024 and has eight caps to his name so far, often playing alongside Chelsea midfielder<span> </span><a href="https://www.chelseafc.com/en/teams/profile/enzo-fernandez" style="color:#0033ff;" rel="external nofollow">Enzo Fernandez</a>.

	On 20 March 2025, Premier League club Chelsea signed Essugo for £18.5m. The transfer was made effective on 2 June ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup; both he and Geovany Quenda were acquired from Sporting, but Quenda remained one more season at the latter. He made his debut on 16 June, as a late substitute for Moisés Caicedo in the 2–0 win over Los Angeles FC in the World Cup group stage.

			In the 13th minute of<span> </span><a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/football/player/josh-acheampong-WGkASmNOCs7m22wU/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">Josh Acheampong</a>’s first ever start at Stamford Bridge, he dribbled between two Shamrock Rovers’ players to loud “oohs” and “aahs” of appreciation from<span> </span><a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/football/team/chelsea/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">Chelsea</a><span> </span>fans.
		</div>

		<div>
			This was an image and sound that seemed a long way off not so long ago. The 18-year-old found himself in the awkward position of being left out of all Chelsea squads, at senior and academy level,<span> </span><a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5861051/2024/10/22/josh-acheampong-chelsea-contract/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">for two months while talks over a new deal showed little sign of reaching a positive conclusion</a>.
		</div>

		<div>
			But any angst was clearly in the past during Chelsea’s 5-1 win over Shamrock Rovers as the defender exuded all the confidence you would want from any academy graduate, just a day after news of a new contract was confirmed by the club. It is the result both sides ultimately wanted but took a bit longer than perhaps anyone expected.
		</div>

		<div>
			An indication of just how much Acheampong’s future was a priority within Chelsea can be seen from when discussions first began to take place. Acheampong, who has been at the club since under-8 level, made his professional debut as a late substitute under previous head coach Mauricio Pochettino in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over<span> </span><a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/football/team/tottenham-hotspur/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">Tottenham</a><span> </span>in May. Sources who have knowledge of the situation, speaking anonymously to<span> </span><em>The Athletic<span> </span></em>to protect relationships, have revealed talks were opened between Chelsea and his representatives a month later.
		</div>

		<div>
			Chelsea’s decision to get things underway so early in the summer was obviously partly because of his talent. Acheampong signed his first pro deal (in January) and it ran until 2026. Due to his rapid progress, the club naturally wanted to ensure he would remain longer than that, especially with<span> </span><a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/football/champions-league/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">Champions League</a><span> </span>clubs already showing an interest.
		</div>

		<div>
			But Chelsea have also now made it their policy that all first team and academy players (aged 18 upwards), who have under two years left on their contracts, must come to an agreement with the club on their future or face being sold.
		</div>

		<div>
			Why is that?
		</div>

		<div>
			Chelsea do not want to be disrupted by players winding down their deals and all the uncertainty caused by discussions over a renewal. For example, since the Todd Boehly-Clearlake consortium took over in May 2022,<span> </span><a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/football/player/mason-mount-nxh7ubMYybqCSabx/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">Mason Mount</a><span> </span>(<a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/football/team/manchester-united/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">Manchester United</a>) and<span> </span><a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/football/player/conor-gallagher-oqIDYc9NkOBANdyR/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">Conor Gallagher</a><span> </span>(Atletico Madrid) have been sold by Chelsea amid much public scrutiny when they had only 12 months remaining on their agreements. Several rounds of talks were held with both England internationals before it reached that point but no extension was ever finalised. The hierarchy do not want to risk a repeat of that.
		</div>

		<div>

				<img alt="fd47defa8367f94d67c29d6291b547ddd61c112a" data-ratio="66.70" width="1024" data-src="https://archive.ph/VHIzG/fd47defa8367f94d67c29d6291b547ddd61c112a.jpg" src="https://forum.talkchelsea.net/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png">

					</div>
				</div>
			</div>
		</div>

		<div>
			So back to Acheampong. The club see him as the third-choice right-back behind captain<span> </span><a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/football/player/reece-james-GKa1YfGdueMrjfBr/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">Reece James</a><span> </span>and<span> </span><a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/football/player/malo-gusto-KkMPBnbQGiyIzvvq/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">Malo Gusto</a><span> </span>(as well as someone who can perform at centre-back). Significantly, Acheampong was included on Chelsea’s pre-season tour to the USA in July under new head coach Enzo Maresca. It sent a significant message of how highly he is regarded, especially with the more experienced<span> </span><a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/football/player/trevoh-chalobah-nA4AuCi9fSD483tE/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">Trevoh Chalobah</a><span> </span>left behind and effectively told to find a new club. The 25-year-old Chalobah, who has made 80 appearances for Chelsea after also coming through the youth ranks, is currently on a season-long loan at<span> </span><a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/football/team/crystal-palace/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">Crystal Palace</a>.
		</div>

		<div>
			Maresca clearly liked what he saw from Acheampong early on, too. He played for the first time under the Italian during the 5-0 win over Barrow in the EFL Cup in September, making his second appearance for Chelsea as a substitute, replacing the experienced<span> </span><a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/football/player/axel-disasi-a01VW0v7OXT1ncu4/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">Axel Disasi</a><span> </span>just after the hour mark.
		</div>

		<div>
			So from this very positive situation, how did things not get resolved sooner? Well, many contract negotiations involve a lot of back and forth, with both sides wanting certain aspects going their way. For example, Chelsea wanted Acheampong to sign up for three more years, longer than his advisors initially wanted.
		</div>

		<div>
			This was the biggest obstacle to overcome. Chelsea did not want to just add one or two years to the current 2026 deal because it would soon require another negotiation. Besides, if Chelsea’s best player<span> </span><a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/football/player/cole-palmer-bho5fd6Swb9J2FH8/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">Cole Palmer</a><span> </span>is prepared to commit to 2033 they felt others should be in the mindset to stay for many years as well.
		</div>

		<div>
			In turn, Acheampong’s camp craved assurances about there being a pathway to play for the senior side — without making any over the top demands about being picked regularly in the<span> </span><a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/football/premier-league/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">Premier League</a>. There was concern that despite the club regarding Acheampong as third in the pecking order of right-backs, he did not even make the bench at<span> </span><a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/football/team/west-ham-united/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">West Ham</a><span> </span>and<span> </span><a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/football/team/bournemouth/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">Bournemouth</a><span> </span>when both James and Gusto were unavailable for selection through injury. Centre-backs<span> </span><a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/football/player/wesley-fofana-B3xBiMo59OK63V81/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">Wesley Fofana</a><span> </span>and Disasi were played out of position there instead. Not being selected as a right-back in the first XI was not so much the issue, it was not even being included as a substitute that caused some alarm. It raised the question whether he was actually behind Disasi and Fofana for a right-sided berth, as well as James and Gusto.
		</div>

				<img alt="774d1961f1ab9a760313112a52d4de30ff9c9b7b" data-ratio="66.70" width="1024" data-src="https://archive.ph/VHIzG/774d1961f1ab9a760313112a52d4de30ff9c9b7b.jpg" src="https://forum.talkchelsea.net/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png">

					</div>
				</div>
			</div>
		</div>

		<div>
			Sources stress that talks took place regularly between the two sides while Acheampong was not representing the academy or senior teams (injury was not a factor for his absence) and a a major breakthrough was made last month. A sign of that was provided by the sight of Acheampong training with Maresca’s UEFA Conference League squad before the fixture against Heidenheim on November 27, albeit he was not included on the trip to Germany. Two days later he represented the Under-21s for the first time since September.
		</div>

		<div>
			Key to the turnaround was the lobbying of co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, co-director of recruitment and talent Joe Shields, plus technical director of Chelsea’s academy Glenn van der Kraan. Maresca had a role in it too by calling a meeting with Acheampong to reassure him he would get to play under him. The Italian has not just shown his admiration privately. He has said on more than one occasion in press conferences this season how much he “loves Josh”. He does not want him to leave on loan either.
		</div>

		<div>
			It also helped that Acheampong’s desire was always to stay at Chelsea. In return for agreeing to the club’s request to a three-year extension, Acheampong was given a slight improvement on the financial terms that were proposed initially — although his salary still sits in the club’s wage structure for the older players at academy level.
		</div>

		<div>
			Shamrock Rovers was actually Acheampong’s second start for Chelsea having made his full debut in the UEFA Conference League at Astana the previous week. Just hours before kick-off against Shamrock Rovers, Chelsea posted a video on social media of Maresca giving a speech inside the senior dressing room at Cobham. It was to officially acknowledge that Acheampong, plus another academy talent<span> </span><a href="https://archive.ph/o/VHIzG/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/football/player/tyrique-george-GmsRVAIJzzPhfEeI/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">Tyrique George</a>, have been given their own lockers there alongside the other first-team players.
		</div>

		<div>

		</div>

		<div>
			It put a nice full stop to the story and Acheampong showed what all the fuss is about with an exemplary 90 minutes in front of the home fans on Thursday.
		</div>

		<div>
			“My goal is to be known as a club legend,” he said in an interview published by Chelsea earlier in the day. With his contract sorted out, he can fully concentrate on his attempt to do just that.

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:1.75rem;">
	Chelsea is delighted to announce the signing of Netherlands international Jorrel Hato from Ajax.
</p>

<p style="color:#1f1f1f;font-size:1rem;">
	The 19-year-old defender has penned a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge through to 2032 and will join up with his new team-mates this week.
</p>

<p style="color:#1f1f1f;font-size:1rem;">
	‘I’m very excited, I’m so happy to be here,’ said Hato. ‘I thought a lot about my future and wanted to take the next step in my career. Chelsea is the best place for me to do that so I’m very happy.’
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:16px;">
	Born in Rotterdam, Hato began his football journey with local side Sparta before moving to Ajax’s youth academy in 2018. He signed his first professional contract in 2022 at just 16 and quickly made his mark in both the UEFA Youth League and for Jong Ajax, the club’s reserve side.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:16px;">
	That same year, he became the third-youngest player ever to debut for Ajax in the Eredivisie, aged 16, in a match against Cambuur. By the end of the season, he was starting in the Dutch Cup final — a testament to his rapid rise.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:16px;">
	<img alt="Hato_CL2_8978.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="77.75" height="799" style="height:auto;" width="1200" data-src="https://img.chelseafc.com/image/upload/f_auto,w_1400,q_90/restricted/2025/Jorrel%20Hato/Hato_CL2_8978.jpg" src="https://forum.talkchelsea.net/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png">
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:16px;">
	He was still 16 when he became the third-youngest player to debut for Ajax in the Eredivisie in a game against Cambuur in February 2023. He finished the campaign starting in the Dutch Cup final.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:16px;">
	Since the start of the 2023/24 season, Hato has been virtually ever-present in the Ajax side. He is equally as comfortable in the heart of defence as he is at left-back, featuring most often in the latter position during the season just gone.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:16px;">
	Hato is strong in the tackle, comfortable carrying the ball forward and has leadership skills that bely his age. He captained Ajax as a 17-year-old.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:16px;">
	<img alt="Hato_CL2_8729.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="77.75" height="799" style="height:auto;" width="1200" data-src="https://img.chelseafc.com/image/upload/f_auto,w_1400,q_90/restricted/2025/Jorrel%20Hato/Hato_CL2_8729.jpg" src="https://forum.talkchelsea.net/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png">
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:16px;">
	On the international stage, his progress has been equally impressive. Hato made his senior debut for the Netherlands aged 17 and has already earned six caps, as well as captaining the Dutch side at the UEFA Under-21 European Championship this summer.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1f1f1f;font-size:16px;">
	Welcome to Chelsea, Jorrel!

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	Jamie Gittens has been destined for Chelsea for some time.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	As far back as January, the west Londoners were in pole position to bring the Reading-born winger back to England after approaching five years in Germany, but had to survive a flurry of late interest from rival clubs and a stubborn Borussia Dortmund negotiation.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	Chelsea were close to completing the transfer before their departure for the ongoing Club World Cup in the United States, submitting two bids on June 10. Ultimately, while the second offer came close to matching Dortmund’s valuation, both clubs believed there was no need to rush.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	That was especially true given Gittens had been a target for Chelsea since 2023, which is when scouts started to be sent out to monitor him. The Premier League club first held formal discussions with Dortmund over him in summer 2024, then again in last season’s winter transfer window.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	After a cooling-off period which allowed both teams to compete in the Club World Cup, the negotiations continued in America. There is a good rapport between the clubs and when their respective tournament training bases overlapped in Florida, talks resumed between the Chelsea delegation and Sebastian Kehl, the Dortmund sporting director, with a breakthrough occurring on Friday June 27, the day before Chelsea beat Benfica 4-1 in Charlotte, North Carolina, to advance to the quarter-finals.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	With an agreement struck in principle, the 20-year-old left Dortmund’s camp the following day, undergoing his medical on Sunday and Monday,<span> </span><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6460201/2025/07/05/jamie-gittens-chelsea-transfers/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">before completing his transfer on Thursday, July 3</a>, for a fee of £48.5million ($66m) with a potential £3.5m more in add-ons.

			</div>
		</div>
	</div>
</div>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	Gittens cannot play for Chelsea in the Club World Cup, on account of having appeared for Dortmund in the group stage, but he has still been involved in training sessions and now has valuable time to integrate socially with his new team-mates.
</p>

<div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;padding:2px 24px 0px;text-align:center;">

			</div>
		</div>
	</div>
</div>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	Dortmund consider this a victory for all parties. Gittens joined them on virtually a free transfer from Manchester City’s academy in summer 2020, with Lars Ricken — the club’s CEO for sport — central to his recruitment and now, five years later, rubber-stamping his sale. He had assimilated well, speaking good German and conducting some club interviews in his second language, and there had been hope that Gittens would stay longer and develop into a Bundesliga star.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	However, given the player communicated his desire to leave in the late spring and his form tailing off during the second half of the 2024-25 domestic season, the club consider this to have been an excellent negotiation by Kehl and Ricken and are happy to have had their valuation met.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	Externally, understanding that valuation has been difficult because of the sliding nature of Gittens’ release clause. Had Dortmund failed to qualify for European competition next season, he would have been available for far less — closer to €40million (£34.5m).
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	As it was, while Gittens was in and out of the Dortmund side in the final weeks, the team mounted a rallying comeback, rising from 10th in the table to fourth across the last eight games. It maximised Gittens’ value and qualified Dortmund for the Champions League, significantly altering their budget; a deal for Gittens could not have been concluded until those variables were known.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	But Chelsea still believe they are getting fine value and that Gittens is a signing to satisfy many of their objectives.
</p>

<div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;padding:2px 24px 0px;text-align:center;">
	<div>
		<img alt="GettyImages-2223679459-2048x1365.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="100.00" height="799" style="height:auto;" width="1200" data-src="https://static01.nyt.com/athletic/uploads/wp/2025/07/08035904/GettyImages-2223679459-2048x1365.jpg" src="https://forum.talkchelsea.net/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png">

	</div>
</div>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	They believe he is one of the finest under-21 wingers in European football, but have been equally attracted by his character and by how much first-team experience he has. Gittens has played over 100 senior games at club level and proven himself a difference-maker in big games in the Bundesliga and the Champions League, showing he is more than mere theory.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	And he fits the profile of player that Chelsea want to use, with one of their prime objectives for this window from the outset being to acquire a right-footed left-winger.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	There is a gap in their ranks to be filled due to the club deciding not to turn Jadon Sancho’s loan from Manchester United last season into a permanent move, while Mykhailo Mudryk has been provisionally suspended since December for failing a doping test. The<span> </span><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6001373/2025/06/18/mykhailo-mudryk-chelsea-ban-doping/" style="color:#386c92;" rel="external nofollow">Football Association charged the Ukraine international with violating its anti-doping rules</a><span> </span>last month and he now faces a lengthy ban.

			</div>
		</div>
	</div>
</div>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	Gittens was Chelsea’s first-choice target for the role ahead of other players they considered, including Athletic Club’s Spain international Nico Williams. While not a driving force within recruitment, head coach Enzo Maresca spoke with the player, too, and is convinced Gittens can be successful within his system.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	The only significant threat during this process has been Dortmund’s domestic rivals and serial German champions Bayern Munich, whose interest in Gittens fluctuated and was muddled by a range of factors.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	One of Bayern’s priorities over the past year has been to rejuvenate their wide forward positions. That was the thinking behind the signing of Michael Olise, now 23, from Crystal Palace last summer, but the Bavarian club accepted they needed further renewal, even though Olise proved a triumph in his first season.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	Kingsley Coman was getting older (he turned 29 last month) and both he and the club were open to a parting of ways in January; Coman could still leave this summer. There is no chance Serge Gnabry (30 next week) will depart in the current window, but his contract is on course to expire at the end of the coming season and the odds, currently, are against a renewal.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	In the autumn of 2024, Gittens was among the standout attacking performers in the Bundesliga. And, in November, shortly after he scored a brilliant breakaway goal against Bayern, their interest became public. But Gittens was never the definitive option for them, more one among a group of candidates.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	In any case, there was a complication: Florian Wirtz.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	Bayern’s mid-range planning was shaped by Wirtz in two ways. Firstly, the financial parameters of any proposed deal to sign him would have limited any other transfer business. While Wirtz eventually joined Liverpool for £116million, any fee between Bayern and Bayer Leverkusen, who were antagonised by their public declarations of interest in Wirtz, would have been higher.
</p>

<div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;padding:2px 24px 0px;text-align:center;">
	<div>
		<img alt="GettyImages-2221185952-2048x1365.jpg" class="ipsImage" data-ratio="100.00" height="799" style="height:auto;" width="1200" data-src="https://static01.nyt.com/athletic/uploads/wp/2025/07/04124726/GettyImages-2221185952-2048x1365.jpg" src="https://forum.talkchelsea.net/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png">
		<div style="background-color:#181818;font-size:0.875rem;padding:20px;">
			<div>
				<div style="vertical-align:middle;">

				</div>
				<span style="color:#fbfbfb;font-size:0.875rem;text-align:left;vertical-align:middle;">Bayern were interested in Wirtz, who signed for Liverpool (Liverpool FC/Liverpool FC via Getty Images)</span>
			</div>
		</div>
	</div>
</div>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	Secondly, with Bayern confident of signing Wirtz, the plan had been to adapt the team in a way that allowed him to play alongside Jamal Musiala, with Olise on the right and Musiala and Wirtz rotating between the central and left positions. Even when it was accepted that Mathys Tel would leave the club (he has joined Tottenham following last season’s loan there), that focus on Wirtz deprioritised Gittens and every other natural winger that Bayern had been following.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	By the time it became clear Wirtz was moving to Anfield (by when Leroy Sane had also, unexpectedly, decided against extending his Bayern contract, choosing to move to Galatasaray of Turkey instead), it was too late for the Munich giants to pivot. Their first choice was Athletic Club’s Williams. Milan’s Rafael Leao was another focus of interest. Gittens, as he had been back in the autumn, was part of that shortlist, too.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	There was no formal contact between Bayern and Dortmund in the weeks before the move was finalised. Approaches were made directly to Gittens’ camp, but it was made clear terms had been agreed with Chelsea and that he was committed to moving to Stamford Bridge.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	Part of Chelsea’s appeal is self-evident: a Premier League club competing in the Champions League. For somebody hoping to be part of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 World Cup, it is a logical move.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	It also reunites him with players with whom he’s played before. Gittens was part of the same England Under-19 squad as Liam Delap and Carney Chukwuemeka in 2022, when they won that age group’s European Championship.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	Joe Shields, Chelsea’s co-director for recruitment and talent, was previously head of academy recruitment at City, and partially responsible for bringing Gittens to their academy (from the youth setup at Reading) in 2018. Delap, another City graduate, has already joined Chelsea this summer, while contemporaries Cole Palmer and Romeo Lavia have also become central to their future, having taken the same route south from the blue half of Manchester.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;font-size:20px;">
	While not the key factor in Gittens’ decision, the above was prominent among them, and helpful in convincing him that this step, which is a major move in the context of his career, is the right one.
</p>
