LIVERPOOL FC bosses signed star player Stewart Downing in a £20million deal after being duped by faked footage of his footie skills.

The club’s principal owner John Henry and chairman Tom Werner saw an impressive YouTube clip of the midfielder firing five consecutive footballs into wheelie bins at long range.

But the training ground stunt had been doctored by marketing brains at the England star's former club, Aston Villa, as part of a viral advertising campaign.

Henry and Werner logged on to the video sharing site when Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish voiced his interest in the player.

Werner said: “There was some footage of Stewart where he is kicking footballs into five different trash cans. It was brilliant.

“John and I said, ’Oh my god, this player is brilliant, we have to figure out a way to make a deal’.”
