I was refering to an energetic strong midfielder... ya know?

Nah don't get me wrong, I get what you meant in that sense but it's not the first time I've seen the Kante-Essien and then Kante-Makelele response.

I made the point a few days ago, thinking ahead of next season assuming we're back where we should be.. Is Kante the type of player we're building our midfield around? I don't think so. I accept the need for short-term solutions now, but we should have an eye on further ahead too. We buy Kante for an excess of £20m now, we then get stuck with such a player for years on end because no-one wants such a player after.

Of course he could turn about to world-class and make me eat my words too . But from seeing him this season, I really don't know what more he offers other than pace and stamina..

I'm hoping and wishing that it's not one or the other with Nainggolan and Kante. We should get both. Ship Mikel who will be completely redundant next season and Oscar.

These two together with Cesc will make us genuine contenders and are perfect Conte players. Mikel is totally one dimensional and Oscar still doesn't even have a position.

If Matic does leave, I can see it being both.

I could be wrong just as easily as you, but the worst I see him is as a serviceable sub off the bench.

Build around? No. Building block? Yes. He is a very useful piece in terms of building a solid midfield.

Signing of the season caliber player if someone gets him for that release clause. Performances like this are what will make it extremely difficult for us to sign him. PSG bound I would guess.

The big question was, can he be as good in a team that controls possesion and takes the initive? If this half is anything to go by hes even better.

Most tackles and interceptions tonight yet he also had the most passes completed (79 compared to Matuidi and Pogba with 52 and 50 respectively). His passing was always purposeful as well (39 passes forwards compared to 13 backwards). He really looks the real deal.

Indeed. Is his offensive game fantastic? No. But with creative players around him and a box to box, dynamic partner in the middle of the park he's the perfect #6.

For France he's got Matuidi next to him as the box to box and Pogba as the playmaker. I'm salivating at the thought of Kante as our DM, Nainggolan as our box to box, and Cesc as the playmaker. Remember Cesc at his best in his first season here and towards the end of this season? When he had time on the ball and ran the show? That's what we'd get with Kante and Nainggolan doing the leg work.

We surely must be in for him.
