CHELSEA are interested in signing highly-rated Porto midfielder Ruben Neves in January, according to reports

An article in UEFA.com described Neves as a defensive midfielder that is not afraid to go forward and prompt attacks, showing great maturity combined with an accurate passing skill, great vision and an astute sense of positioning. His playing attributes also granted him comparisons to Portuguese international João Moutinho for his fine first touch, similar desire to press his opponents and excellent distribution.[12]

wow. to think that someone could have just gotten on the damn horse, sold Ramires, Ivanovic, Mikel, Oscar, etc. and started scooping up some real CM talent during the summer (or started buying good CMs the previous summer, or 2 summers ago, or 3 summers ago.....)

IDK if the top four spots will be nailed by other PL clubs, but at the moment, West Ham's CM looks stronger, Crystal Palace could rock Chelsea every time, and we're not even going to talk about the rest of the "big clubs."

Good luck with all this, CFC.

I agree with your implication that this has been a problem for years, and not just at CM. We have tended to recruit players with qualities rather than players of quality. I love Rami for some of his qualities, many of us do, but he simply isn't of the quality a top level club needs. That's how it is for many members of our squad.

Given Chelsea's resources our XI on any given day should contain more quality than most opponents it faces. There have been, and there continues to be, too many occasions when our side has not come close to matching that expectation. We simply have to get better at selecting the players coming in to our squad.

The brilliance of our manger and the long lasting effects of the system and attitude he installed during his first spell has often papered over the cracks but, in the end, it really does come down to the players. All involved have to up their game.

I remember when Mourinho was saying on Chelsea TV about Matic transfer that when he's home and IF he watches football in his spare time he watches a lot of Porto and Benfica. He said that he watched Matic several times without scouting intention when watching Benfica and he was very well aware of all his qualities - simply put, he scouted a player for himself (unheard of in today's times at top clubs) even unintentionally.

So I think Jose is very well aware of Ruben Neves.

I like him. He seems mature well beyond his years. I'm surprised he's just 18. Only watched highlights and U21 championship but anyone who can position himself while pass with outside foot is a player I like.

Just good to be linked with several central midfielders.
