Bounty Hunters.

A question for our U.S readers here. I've just read in the Guardian that a country singer called Randy Howard was shot and killed in his home by a bounty hunter. The only knowledge i have of bounty hunters is from the film Midnight Run. Here's a quote from the case.

When asked if authorities were investigating whether Shell had the right to enter Howard’s home, DeVine said he couldn’t discuss specifics but the “investigation includes all aspects of the incident”

What i want to know is how much power and jurisdiction does a bounty hunter have?. Who hires them is it the Police, the F B.I.or can any law enforcement put a price on anyone's head?. Is it regulated or just a bit of a free for all?. Anyway cheers for any help.

I have no answer to your question tho, maybe some american members will know better.

Fair enough mate just can' t believe that any fucker can shoot someone dead on the premise of being a bounty hunter. The term bounty hunter is a complete misnomer surely it's just a lawless twat hunting another lawless twat.

It depends on the individual state's law whether the bounty hunter can enter someone's private property. In most states, the bounty hunter can only enter the fugitive's property without any warrant.

Bounty hunters catch, I think, 9/10 people who skip their trial. They're employed by bail bondsmen, those who pay pail for someone incarcerated. But bounty hunters don't work on civil matters.

As for the Rand Howard guy, he opened fire and shot the bounty hunter first. Most of them are licensed to perform those duties, though they have to apprehend the fugitive.

"On March 16, 2014, he struck another car while driving without a license in Georgia, then fled the scene. In November, he was sentenced to a year of probation for the offense. Gwinnett County, Georgia, court records also show two more hit-and-runs by Howard.

He was wanted back home in Tennessee, too. According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Howard had recently been charged in Marion County with DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a firearm while intoxicated and driving on a revoked license."

Make of it what you will. Here in Florida, bounty hunters aren't allowed by the state.

if you haven`t been to America,,don`t let the media put you off..it really isn`t as bad as they portray the majority of the country to be like. there`s just certain areas of some of the major cities that are bad places to be at night.but they are in parts of the city you`d have no reason to visit unless you want to do the crime show tour.

Parts of the USA are portrayed badly. Definitely.

Detroit for crime, Los Angeles for drugs and prostitution, down town Florida for crime, the deep south for red necks and racists, New Mexico for drugs, New York for crime and Ghettos and you're all gun tooting maniacs

the brady bunch, the waltons, little house on the prairie..the examples of how scary America can be on the tv are endless..

Yes but that's from the 70's. You can't compare something like Kojak and Starsky and Hutch with The Wire for example. American TV has always been seen as the poor relation to film until shows like 24 etc started being made in the early noughties.

The only bounty hunters (or should that be fugitive recovery agent) Ive seen anything about is Dog and his lot. And from what I gather they can enter with force the adress of the person they want but cant enter the house of somewhere he is like a family member or friend. But saying that Ive often seen him pushng past someone at the door.

I know its allowed in all states apart from 3 or 4 , they sometimes have more powers than the cops and Ive always thought that they cant bring in arrestees with scratchs, bruises etc or they wont be accepted at the jail due to legal liabilities. But often on Dog they get slight injuries (not from Dog tho hes a joke)

Hes looking fit tho eh
