The last week has revealed a side to Ashley Cole many didn't expect to see: the responsible, mature, popular professional.

So clouded is the public's view of Cole, due in main to media coverage of his private life, that many will refuse to accept what they are now seeing is the real deal.

But the Ashley Cole of the witness box (who caught the feeling of many in saying “We shouldn't even be here”), and the Ashley Cole on the receiving end of Rio Ferdinand's 'choc ice' barb (who refused to rise to it, and simply walked away from the insult) is, by many informed accounts, the real thing.

Cole has had a hard time at the hands of the media: much was made of his ill-advised comments about stellar salaries in his book; and his treatment of tabloid princess Cheryl Cole did not win many friends in the court of public opinion.

And unfortunately (though, perhaps, understandably) he has decided that he does not want to play the media game required to retrieve his reputation. Indeed his response to journalists wanting to interview him in the warm afterglow of Chelsea's Champions League final win was limited to two words (the second being 'off').

But among other players, Cole is hugely liked and respected.

While fighting tooth and nail for Chelsea on the pitch, once he hits the tunnel he is almost invariably said to be the social hub – and has close friends across many clubs.

The respect comes at England level, too, where despite horrible treatment from some fans, he is cited by many of his international team-mates as the man they would go to first for back-up, or seek to bring on a night out.

In court last week he described John Terry as 'a close friend', Anton Ferdinand as 'a friend', and Rio Ferdinand as 'closer'.

Rio, in pure petulance, this weekend appeared to throw one of the most offensive comments imaginable at Cole.

It is typical of the Cole we seldom see to bury the hatchet and move on.

I'm not on Twitter because i know what it can get like but i like watching ppl. Ash's tweets are already legendary, attacking Arsenal straight away.

Same here. Read Cole's twitter and a bit of Piers Morgan's... who in the hell, if anybody, gave that guy PR lessons? Celebrities shouldn't have twitters, it makes them look stupid for whatever reasons, although it's fun to read and laugh what some of the braindead smudge (*cough*Rio*cough*)... like watching a kid trying to write.

I hope Terry and Lampard never make twitters, or do they have already?
