The club has today announced that Chief Executive, Ron Gourlay, has left the club "to pursue new business opportunities."

Gourlay who has been at the club for a full decade, and was for years the face of the Chelsea Football Club administration, receiving a lot of criticism for the board's shortcomings but also much praise for their achievements, especially in the last couple of years.

Ron said: "It has been a privilege to have played a role in the club’s considerable achievements both on and off the pitch over the last 10 years, but I feel the time is right to move on to other challenges. I would like to thank Mr Abramovich, the directors, the manager and players and all the staff for their support during my time at the club, and wish them much continued success in the future."

The club also announced that pending additional appointments, Chairman Bruce Buck and Director Marina Granovskaia will assume additional executive responsibilities.

Ron, you were by no means our favorite person at the club, but it is time acknowledge and appreciate all the work you've done for us. Thank you for everything, and good luck wherever you go.

Agree with Amels.... very strange to do this now.

Unsure on what to make of this really. We seemed rather settled at bored level and now we need to find a new CEO. Hopefully someone inside the club will take up the role.

Weird timing... you'd have to think that either he's got a lifetime opportunity on the table or that the club is forcing him out which would be stupid on our side considering, again, the timing of this news.

I think he has been slowly pushed out for some time now with Granoviskaia slowly taking his role for over a year now.

Yeah, I think he did a good job and I liked him very much unlike the previous idiot who was here, Kenyon. He was always very supportive of the managers and from a financial, balancing the books perspective, he's been top notch. His departure has absolutely no effect/relation whatsoever on the team or coaching staff and that's what is important, so it doesn't bother me. We just need to bring in someone as good as Ron, obviously.

Marina Granovskaia's incredible ascent to becoming the most powerful woman in world football is set to continue after Chelsea confirmed Ron Gourlay is leaving his post as chief executive.

Gourlay is said to be giving up his role to pursue new business opportunities, leaving the way clear for Granovskaia to take even more responsibility at Stamford Bridge.

It kind of reminds me of Ray Wilkins and his departure in 2010. It also came out of nowhere.

Me too! We were again first in the league (I think we were 7 points ahead of the second team) and after that there was a really bad streak of results. Hopefully that won't be the case now!
