Tomorrow, despite all the transfer deadline week madness, the attention of the football world turns to Monaco where the Champions League group stage draw is to take place. So what do you need to know about this event and what awaits Chelsea in this draw?

First, obviously the draws aims at sorting the 32 qualified teams into 8 groups of 4. The 32 teams are divided into 4 pots/levels depending on their EUFA Coefficients. Each group must have only one team from each of the 4 pots. The teams in the 4 pots are:

Chelsea will naturally occupy the spot for the team from Pot 1 in it's group. Since no two teams from the same federation can be drawn into the same group, our potential opponents are everyone from Pot 2 excpet for City, everyone from pot 3 except for Liverpool and all the teams from Pot 4.

From Pot 2: FC Schalke 04, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, FC Shakhtar Donetsk, FC Basel or FC Zenit

From Pot 3: Leverkusen, Olympiacos FC, PFC CSKA Moskva, AFC Ajax, Sporting Clube de Portugal, Galatasaray AŞ or Club Athletic

From Pot 4: RSC Anderlecht, AS Roma, APOEL FC, FC BATE Borisov, Ludogorets, NK Maribor, AS Monaco FC or Malmo

Worst case scenario, our group would look like:
-Chelsea
-Dortmund/Juventus
-Leverkusen/CSKA (Jose would NOT want a mid week trip to Moscow!)
-Roma

Best case:
-Chelsea
-Basel/Schalke
-Olympiacos/Sporting
-Malmo/Ludogorets

So, all in all, tomorrow's darw is bound to produce some mouth-watering fixtures. Fingers crossed we steer well clear of those!

Worst case scenario would definitely be Shaktar, CSKA and BATE Borisov/APOEL

That's a shit load of travelling.

I tried to balance it between travel and difficulty. I wouldn't say that's the worst case scenario because you can probably rest some players completely for some matches and have qualification wrapped up by game 4. The intensity of the matches will not be the same as facing Juventus or Dortmund for example.

I'd make that

I wouldn't underestimate the French sides, especially PSG.

Normally at this point of the year I'm worried about who we are going to draw. Not this time however. I want us to face some strong teams to fully prepare for knock-out stages.

Meh, I just want us to get through quickly and easily as group winners. When you consider that we face City (A), Arsenal (H), Liverpool (A) and United (A) straight after 4 of our group games, it's beyond me why someone would want 'tough' fixtures. That just leaves no scope for rotation and rest. Besides, every 'strong' team in Europe is a known commodity - we'd not be learning anything new or useful (about them or us) that we don't already know.

Hmm, I actually think they're pretty tough sides and would like to see us avoid them both, but is PSG really at the level of Dortmund and Juventus? I think that's debatable, but, for me, if I have to choose between having Roma or Monaco in our group, the choice is pretty clear. Roma have a very good team and have made some smart signings this window. They'd be a major threat in any group, imo. I think Monaco are "manageable".

PSG would be a couple of tricky games, but I'd love us to get them again because it's a great away day. From that perspective fuck getting teams from Russia, Ukraine or Bulgaria.

Ajax and Anderlecht would be nice teams to draw too.

I kind of want Chelsea to be drawn with Zenit, just to see Mourinho vs Villas-Boas

As for the rest of the teams, avoiding Dortmund and Roma would be a massive advantage

Forgot that cunt was there. It's just a lot of travel, early kick-offs and shitty pitches to deal with without a storyline about mentor vs master again.

Honestly this year I'm not fussed. Wouldn't mind us getting any of the teams to be honest, although we've had Juve, Schalke, Shaktar, Basel and PSG in recent years. Dortmund would be different at least.
