Chelsea are set to move ahead of Arsenal in the race for William Carvalho by making a £35million offer for the Sporting Lisbon midfielder.

The Blues have ramped up their interest in Carvalho in the last few days and despite Jose Mourinho insisting that his shopping is finished, he is readying an offer for the player.

According to Abola newspaper, the bid will be about £35million – £2million short of his release clause – but Sporting could be open to selling at that price.

He's an option for next year imo. While we have other B2B players on the bench, reserves and youth teams, we don't really have a Matic replacement at all except Mikel. Along with Costa, Matic is also another player that would be very hard to replace if he gets injured. Dude does the work of 2 players almost, he's a destroyer and an anchor man combined.

Matic is 26 years old, we don't need to spend £35m on a bench player, not even a future injury to Matic could justify that; it would be superfluous.

This move just doesn't make sense as long as Mikel is here...35M is a ton of money to spend on a "back up" for Matic. Neither can play as a true "8" so I just can't see this happening.

That being said, I'd LOVE to keep him away from Arsenal as I feel he's exactly what they need, but at 35M it just doesn't make sense.

Would be insane. 35M for a defensive midfielder with almost no experience? Matic was the player of the year in Portugal with European experience and he was 21M pounds. And why? Matic and Fabergas are going to be starters and probably for years to come. 35M pounds for an unproven backup defensive midfielder? I remain highly skeptical but if this happens, it will be like the Willian situation where we deliberately overpay by a wide margin just so a rival can't get a player it wants which I think is ridiculous.

Carvalho got the best agent in the world. He's somehow linked to every single top club in the world, every week. But he's not coming, not for the prices being thrown around, not even close to quality enough for that price.

That is way too much money for him considering that we have 2 players named Nemanja and Francesc that would walk straight into any starting 11 in the world.

Crazy, 35m while we payed around that much for Fabregas and we all know how good is he xD

Just agent giving his client advertising and a future new contract...
