I read the history of the Greek hippodrome, in Constantinople. It was chariot races, the blues and the greens. At some point it was closed, don't remember exactly - long before Ottoman Empire. Stabbings were a daily occurence and in fact all the spectators carried knives - for personal defense as well as the various unruly elements.

Are we no better ??? It kills sport.
