2022 World Cup will take place in Winter

Fucking pathetic. Hope The FA threatens to boycott it.

Fifa has completely ruled out any prospect of the Qatar 2022 World Cup being played in the summer.

President Sepp Blatter had already said the tournament would be in November or December but organisers had still hoped to host it in June and July.

But Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke says it could take place between 15 November and 15 January.

"The dates for the World Cup (in Qatar) will not be June-July," Valcke told Radio France.

So what happens to the domestic leagues? surely legally clubs can refuse to let their players go half way through a season? what legal power does FIFA have?

Only reason it's their in the first place is because FIFA is corrupt and has been proven so, they pretty much do whatever they fucking want with no legal ramifications

The bid was for the summer world cup of 2022....we could now have a winter world cup in 2023.:doh:

Plus you've got the African Cup of Nations in January 2023. So are we supposed to have a season start in August and then have a month-long break (realistically it would need to be more than that for training camps and the such)?

Then you've got other considerations like American networks screening games when the NFL Playoffs are in full swing, as well as the College Football bowl games. It's a massive fucking joke and they should just put it in a more suitable country.

Sounds like a nightmare, not that fifa care however embarrassing it is, as long as they get bribes. I'm don't even care much about the WC, just the massive disruption it will have on club football

Absolute farce. Strip it from the Qataris and award it to a proper sporting nation like Australia (who should have won the bid).

Hopefully there is scope for legal action if Qatar are granted permission to host the WC in the winter given that parties were invited to bid for an event that was to be hosted in the summer. They only won the bid because they were able to convince officials that they could make artificial bloody clouds and air conditioned stadia (and bucket loads in bribes to boot). The mantra the FIFA pedal about spreading the love of football around the world as being the reason why Qatar was awarded the bid is laughable, how Blatter and co are not too embarrassed to show their faces in public bemuses me.

And, forgetting the disruption to the league for a second, what kind of place is Qatar for fans to travel to? FIFA/UEFA really don't give a shit about match-going fans do they?

Part of me would love to see a fight between the top leagues and FIFA to block a winter world cup but they will probably fall in life and get shafted like the rest of us.

Its not surprising the whole thing is one massive clusterfuck.

All those FIFA representatives who 'voted' on the location cared about was what was in their envelopes that were slid under the table. Never mind Qatar being a raging hotbed of homophobia or that Nepalese slave labourers are dying daily building the stadia. The ones that have not died have had their passports taken away, and have not been paid for months. Fuck Qatar, and Fuck FiFA.

As Mr_President said, it makes a whole mockery of their initial bid in which they claimed holding a World Cup in Qatar in 2022 in the Summer would be possible due to investment and research into air conditioning and cooling systems to be used in stadia.

A quote from their official bid website:

"Each of the five stadia will harness the power of the sun's rays to provide a cool environment for players and fans by converting solar energy into electricity that will then be used to cool both fans and players at the stadia. When games are not taking place, the solar installations at the stadia will export energy onto the power grid. During matches, the stadia will draw energy from the grid. This is the basis for the stadia's carbon-neutrality. Along with the stadia, we plan to make the cooling technologies we’ve developed available to other countries in hot climates, so that they too can host major sporting events."

Cooling technologies and dealing with extreme heat were key points of their bid. They won't be necessary if the world cup is held in Winter because daytime highs range from 22-24C. If there would have been one tiny, tiny positive from holding the world cup in Summer in Qatar it is that investment in such technologies could benefit disadvantaged parts of the world in terms of building design. However, the World Cup should never have been given to Qatar anyway. FIFA probably took bribes and thought all the pretty CGI stadiums would be a brilliant idea, completely ignoring the fact that the 50C climate would be a huge problem. Now they realize there's a problem, they're allowing Qatar to bend the rules. A little bit of pre-thinking and knowledge that the USA, Australian, Korean and Japanese bids would have made far more sense would have gone a long way. They might not have had all the flashy new stadiums but at least they are sporting nations that have hosted similar events before.

But still, decision made. Good one FIFA, hold the World Cup somewhere where:

  • Summer temperatures reach 50C
  • The consumption of alcohol is legal only in a few bars, clubs and restaurants
  • Homosexuality is illegal
  • Israel isn't recognized as a state
  • Sandstorms can severely affect transport and block out the sun
  • visiting the country is already very expensive
  • There have been large scale political protests in recent years
  • Slave labourers are responsible for all the shiny new buildings
