Fernando Torres, Chelseas number nine!

He hasnt always been a number nine, though, as he first started playing football trying to keep out strikers such as himself. He discovered that his talent wasn't to prevent goals, but to score them instead and was scouted into Atletico Madrids youth set-up when he was just 11 years old.

Four years later, his progression in the youth team saw him warrant a professional contract with the club. After a few hindrances due to injury, Fernando deputised for Atlético two years later, in 2001. The following week saw him score his first professional goal for the club.

Torres development continued as he started to further improve his goals-game ratio, and was awarded with the captaincy at the tender age of 19 as result of his hard work and commitment. Torres and his team-mates made it to the Intertoto Cup final, following their seventh place finish in the 2003-04 season, allowing Torres to showcase his talents to wider, European audience. Chelsea were said to be interested in this young prospect but Atlético soon eradicated any chances of Torres departure, claiming there would be no chance that he would be leaving the club. Torres himself publicly announced that hed refused an offer to sign for Chelsea after the 2006 World Cup, though it didn't take him too long to decide a Premier League was for the better, and sacrificed playing in sunny Spain to miserable Merseyside.

A rumoured £25m was the amount Liverpool forked out for El Niño, which turned out to be quite the astute investment. Torres didnt take long to find his feet on Merseyside, scoring on his Anfield debut against none other than guess who - yes, Chelsea! in a 1-1 draw. He soon won the Kopites over and was a fan-favourite in no time. He made 102 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 65 goals in that time, which is rather impressive - that impressive that Roman Abramovich could no longer witness Torres in the red of Liverpool and was persistent in acquiring the Spaniard - of which Liverpool finally succumbed to a £50m offer, making Fernando Torres the most expensive British transfer and simultaneously the sixth most expensive player in history.

El Niño arrived at the Bridge as one of, if not the most-wanted striker in world football. His eye-catching form and goal-scoring record for Liverpool made everyone stand up and take note. Abramovich wanted the World Cup-winner within the Chelsea ranks, and did his all to acquire the baby-faced assassin. The problem with such a hefty price-tag, though, is that extortionately high expectations come alongside it. All us Blues were hoping for Torres to set the world alight, but in fact, he dipped in form and we witnessed Fernando go through a media-hyped goal drought. 903 minutes since his last goal, Torres finally scored for Chelsea in a 3-0 win over the Hammers. Blues fans worldwide were hoping this would provide the confidence boost that Torres would need to kick-start his Chelsea career.

Again, it wasn't to be and the Chelsea fans' patience may have started to run a little thin. However, with the new season came renewed hope, and this was showcased by Fernando. He seemed like a summer signing wanting to make an impression, not a January acquisition that had been at the club for several months now... He was looking fresh, fit and fierce and managed to bag his second goal for the club against Manchester United on September 18th.

As the media will make you fully aware, the Spaniard then suffered another prolonged period without a goal - a period stretching 24 games. His next goal was to come in March 2012, in an F.A. Cup tie against Leicester City. As I'm sure we're all aware, statistics and figures may be impressive on a résumé, but ultimately they're useless. Although Torres had been subject to another barren spell of goalscoring form, everyone watching Chelsea were able to witness Fernando continue to grow and embed himself within the club. Now he's started to find his fifty-million-pound feet, we're all hoping he can add many goals to his account and return Chelsea to where they want to be... top of the Premier League!
