Financial Fair Play

Recommended Posts

The world isn't fair. However that's already a known issue, UEFA and football generally is a business and they need to continue growing their business.. That's why UEFA won't expel giants out the CL like Real, PSG, City, Chelsea etc. They simply can't afford not to have these clubs, with their sponsors and massive fan bases, in the Champions League. FFP has only come about because of external pressures for UEFA and FIFA to sort out their financial messes as highlighted by Portsmouth et al.

At the end of the day, clubs can choose to live within or beyond the FFP restrictions. And to be fair, it does look like clubs are trying to comply with it, but they know they can push the boundaries of it and not face exclusion from the CL. Unless they push it too far..

PSG chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi wants UEFA discussions regarding FFP

The money will give Premier League sides more financial muscle with which to attract the world's best players and could, according to Al-Khelaifi, leave the rest of Europe unable to compete given the constraints placed upon them by UEFA's FFP rules.

"We're going to speak to UEFA to try and find a solution. With England, which is going to receive enormous TV rights money, financial fair play is not only the problem of French football, but also all the other European countries," Al Khelaifi told reporters after PSG wrapped up their title-winning season with a 3-2 victory over Reims on Saturday.

---------------

That EPL TV deal is what broke the camels back. Now thanks to that UEFA has to lower the restriction of FFP. Which it should be good as it allows more investor with money to spend. I rather see that then same team dominating all the time.

UEFA to relax financial fair play rules

http://www.espnfc.us/uefa-champions-league/story/2507973/uefa-relax-financial-fair-play-rules

Well it was coming. I was saying it that after that new deal from the EPL it had to change.

Because everyone was complaining how teams like Chelsea was able to buy and PSG couldn't.

Oh well better for the game overall then having the same old team always in the semis.

We seem to take FFP too seriously. While I admire the club work in recent years, it will bite us in the ass if we will continue to respect FFP this much, while barca, real, city, psg, united, etc will continue to not give a shit.

Tbh I do think this new era of not spending ridiculous money on players has actually helped us in the last 4 years.

But I agree we need to stop being so prudent and splash out on probably 1 new (world class) key player every year or so.

We desperately need a world class RW and after that we'll likely have to replace JT and then Ivan in the coming years.

Yes we did brilliant in last couple of years with the new policy indeed.

But FFP is now even less important than ever and all teams will pay whatever money for players they want and if we wont be the same, it will cut us out in signing races for majority of best players out there.

What I dont want is to sign a world class player every year just for the sake of it because he is available or sth. But if Mourinho clearly wants someone specific, then we should not limit our offer. Try to playing bit of hard ball with them, if works good, if not pay full price before someone else does.

Mourinho was splashing big in past with Essien, Carvalho, Drogba (back then those were some heavy prices for them), but it worked well. Because we were ready to get the players he wanted for any cost. And we had great success.

I dont want us to fall out of every race for players that we are interested just because we are not ready to pay. We should never go crazy for some 100m bids, but if player is available and Mou wants him, then try to get him, money should be least of problem atm.

The main problem is that we dont want to pay 50m or so for single player, but we pick alternative that we still pay 30m for and he is even more overpriced (30m for Willian, 20m for Scurrle, 30m for Cuadrado, while we could just go all out and offer 50m+ for someone who was actualy top back then). Willian is still here only because he is a great worker, and decent at everything else, but thats it.

I didn't mean a World Class player every year for the sake of it :P. But we need a World Class CAM or RW urgently and filling the other of those 2 positions, a new CB and a new RB (LB if Azpi moves back to RB) needs to happen in the near future if we want to maintain our performances in the league and compete properly in Europe.

Agree wholeheartedly re the £50M+ thing. I liked Schurrle and I like Willian but if we'd gone for a properly World Class player at the time we would be much better off now.

in the past we have overpaid,,usually by 10m for players.sometimes less.. but Man City paying so much for Sterling and De Bruyne..instead of having the option to get cheaper deals for not yet fully developed stars..you got to pay the price on the presumption that they will reach their full potential.

we had the same problem with Stones..good player,i`m more sure about him being a top player at his position than atleast Sterling but twice the price we should be paying.

in the past what was paid for them meant world superstars at the top of their game. there`s more money coming in but the prices are shooting up for the same things teams would have paid half for only a year or two ago.so we aren`t really gaining better depth when we pay 40m for potential where as we could have got 2 players of that standard a year or two ago.

the TV deal will help the premiership be a tougher competition and if we continue to rely on signing players instead of our own youth players.we will get to a stage where our squad is entirely made up of foreign players with very few English players playing in the champions league atall.

like Fergie said a few years ago..it`s not the prices for the top stars that are the problem..it`s the 15-20m for a nobody. they all add up.

Chelsea FC plc today announced our annual financial results for the year ended 30 June 2015 with the club’s second highest turnover figure and break-even under UEFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations achieved.

On revenues of £314.3m for the year, a £23.1m loss was recorded but after relevant adjustments the club is comfortably within the allowable limits of FFP, which measures expenditure against the income from football-related activities. Chelsea has complied with FFP criteria throughout its monitoring periods which began with the 2011/12 season.

all seems very reasonable especially with extra income for this season onwards coming in.

Can an accountant type chappie who has knowledge in these things explain why we cannot do a 'Man City' and effectively hide wages by having a 3rd party holding company?

I guess this is why we didn't spend any money this summer.

We was at a lost and it would have grown with buying more players.

not really......and summer spending after June would go on the next set of figures and signings are amortised anyway.

Might have had something to do with getting Torres off the books though.....again, accountant advice anyone

According to Jake Cohen, specialist in those kind of things, the £40M swing in profit/losses (£18M profit last year and £23M loss this year) comes down to:

- £11M less in transfer sale profit

- weaker CL performance

- Increase in player costs (Costa at £16M/accounting year, Fabregas 13.8, Luis 9,...)

Anyway, with the Yokohama deal kicking in this year and the future TV deal, the financial outlook is looking good.
